Saris Bones Carrier Question

I have a Saris Bones 2 which I have only used to transport my road bike which is extrememly light etc.

I also have a hybrid which I would guess weighs approx 15 - 16kg and am wondering if it safe to transport this given that the max. recommended weight per bike for that particular carrier is 35lbs.?

Presumably, there is a safety buffer built in, but would like to check if anyone has had any experience in this regard?

    Many thanks.

I have a Bones 3, but no experience in loading it that heavily. I would say the main concern would be whether the car would take that load rather than the bike rack, as you're anchoring it to the boot after all. Whatever margin Saris may have in the rack, you don't know what the car may take.

Thanks for that cyton - that thought did cross my mind, but given that the car is approved by Saris as being suitable for a Bones 2 and 3 carrier, which potentially has a maximum approved carrying load of 45kgs., I had ruled out concerns as to whether the load would be too much for the car. I am not sure if this makes sense?

I've loaded our Bones 3 with my old warhorse bike which with brackets for kid seats and carrier etc weighs over 15kg, plus my wifes bike and the daughters, total weight probably around 40kg, and driven to France with no problem. I'm pretty sure the biggest issue is the total weight and to make sure you're within the limits for your car (can't remember the term for it off the top of my head)

Working off the lever principle I always load the heaviest bike first so it's closest to the car on the carrier arms

Many thanks for that information JMcL - I would only be carrying 1 bike at a time, therefor maximum weight of 15kg. which is the recommeded maximum for each bike - my concern arose due to the fact that my hybrid weighs up to that upper limit, but like you considered that it should be safe, given the total weight allowance for the rack etc. It is comforting nontheless to know of other people's experience. Thanks again.
