Upgrading Gas Boiler and Control System with Airtricity

    Hi All,

My gas boiler needs a service so when looking on the airtricity site I found that they will give you a quote for new boiler and controls. It cost nothing so I went for it.

Got quoted 2,300 to replace the existing boiler and put in zone controlled heading and TRV's on 5 major rads in the house.

The question is the the current boiler isn't a problem just needs a service but is 10+ years old. We currenly have 14 rads running on this and have a termostat in down stairs hall and up stairs. At the moment we can heat the water only by turn down the thermo stats in summer.

Doing a small bit of work to the house at the minute so was tempted to do this now while I am.

Is it worth the cost of 2,300 and will I see the saving in heating bill etc or am I better off to wait until something goes and just service the current boiler.

    Thanks for your help.

tbh, I have a 7 year old boiler and having a similar discussion with myself, albeit leaving Airtricity and going back to ESB (or whatever it's called this week..........). Dumping an appliance at these ages seems nuts.

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Your boiler / central heating system is needed to replace heat lost from your house. By reducing this heat loss you win in 2 ways; 1, reduced fuel burned and 2, better comfort.
So, imo and not knowing anything about the heat loss characteristics of your house, I suggest you concentrate on improving the heat retention properties of your house first and perhaps your 2300 euros would be better spent on this.
Note, I'm not just talking about upgrading insulation.

Also, personally, I wouldn't use any utility company to do any work on my house (either boiler servicing or boiler upgrading).

The insulation in the attic is now same age of the house which is over 10 years old. Is it worth taking this out and starting again. I live in a four bed semi D timber frame house. Have one cold bed room which has 3 external walls which is probably the main reason. Thinking of stripping this room down and re-insulate the walls and put on 52.5mm insulated plaster board.

Am I foolish throwing out the existing insulation in the attic and starting again. There is only 100max "itchy" insulation up there at the minute. If I start again and go to 300mm that probably would be money better spent.

Might spend the money on a new front door instead of a gas boiler.
