New car registered in dealership's name

An elderly relative recently bought a brand new car from a long established main dealership and, when he asked, was told that the document to tax it (RF100) would be posted to him.

Over 2 weeks and a number of requests later the form didn't arrive and, as he was anxious to tax it, I logged into motortax.ie using the registration number and the last 6 digits of the chassis number from the plate under the windscreen to find that the car is registered in the name and address of the dealership.

The car was definitely not sold as a demo model so there is no logical reason why the car was and remains registered to the dealership. Can anyone suggest why this might have happened?

    Pre-reg?

    What car it is it?

Is it definitely not taxed already?

Sold as brand new, reg 151D11XXX which was in line with new cars being registered around the same time

I'd say it's probably a clerical error between the dealer and Shannon at the time of registration, it would explain why the person never received the form because the car is not in their name. I'd be hounding the dealer to sort it out.

Update: Buyer went to dealership today and the car has now been transferred to his name. No explanation other than "the girl" had transferred it. I taxed it this evening and even though the deal was done in early February and delivery taken on 9 February motortax.ie required a month's arrears as the car was registered in 01/15.

Not sure why a dealer would do this - perhaps pre-reg as colm_mcm said or maybe a demo model but the buyer was definitely sold the car as brand new at full list price.

Unfortunately the buyer doesn't want to take it further or for me to name and shame - he doesn't want any trouble with the garage in case he has problems with the car - but it was a remarkably questionable level of service from one of the longest established main dealerships for one of the top selling brands.

Did the dealer get some kind of discount on the car from the manufacturer to register the car ?, then sell it unscrupulously as a brand new car to someone he knew would let it go?. Dealer I bought off registered a new car on the last day of the month, the bollix . Luckily the girl in the tax office took pity on me and declared the car off the road for the month( she couldn't understand why he did that) there by saving me a months arrears. I won't forget that one.

Will you tell us what model it is?

Why do I think its a micra?

Much as I'd love to name and shame the dealer I have to respect the buyer's wishes to let the matter rest - but not a micra

Don't care about the dealer, just curious about the brand.

Sounds like your friend was a soft touch if they paid list price, disgraceful if they register it in their own name to claim some extra rebate, distort sales figures or similar.

Ya , my first thought was they are distorting sales figures,
The problem for the op is his car is a two owner car which for a new car does devalue it

If the name is changed before its taxed it doesn't add an owner.
