Hi All, we want to do a track day together with my wife but one of the requirements is a helmet each. Are there any places that rent hrhelmets in Ireland? Don't really want to go and spend God knows how much on something that I might never again (enough clutter as is).

    Thanks!

Buy a second hand one, even a motor bike lid will do for trackdays.

No way would I take that advice, buy new, a second hand helmet that could have been dropped, painted, crashed God knows how many times before you get it. They are designed for one impact only, the second one could open it up like an eggshell. A good new helmet from a bike shop starts at around 70e ffs.
The last two helmets of mine I scrapped by cutting holes in the shell and cutting the chin strap out of,I'd never dream of selling an old helmet. how much is your head worth?

What you're saying is pretty ridiculous, when you take into account its a road spec vehicle being used. A helmet is probably more than likely going to cause damage in a crash when using a road spec vehicle, not prevent it.

Airbags, car seatbelts, etc are all designed for users not wearing helmets. It's in no way comparable to using a helmet in a proper racing car.

I can see both sides of the argument.
Why do you need a helmet at all if you're in a road car with airbags ect in that case, if it's going to cause more damage?

You can buy cheap helmets, I'd just get a new one to save my face from someone else's disgusting head sweat.

Airbags prevent you from snapping your neck. A helmet protects your head from intrusion, debris etc.

and just to add... all the safety systems used on a normal road car were not designed with the intention of track use.

New 70 euro helmets are very basic and are probably not fire resistant / proof or certified for any form of actual racing. Would do for track day at low to moderate speeds.

Last time I bought a motorbike crash helmet I was looking at 2 or 3. All fitted well and had good safety scores and decent reviews.

Salesman asked me the classic question "How much is your head worth?".

Correct the cheap ones aren't certified for most racing classes. The argument of how much is your head worth is all very well and good but where is the limit. You can spend 5k on a helmet. Anybody here have 5k to spend on a helmet??

I haven't spent a 5th of that on my car. :pac:

Like everything in life, but the best you can afford. And save a little first, it'll make more sense in the long run.

Take a look at motorcycle couriers next time. Most of them will be on old/scrappy bikes but a lot of them will be wearing top of the range Arai helmets!

The helmet is the only thing between your head snd the ground so never go cheap on it.

Yes, on a motorbike. We need helmets for a car track day. Should have mentioned it in my first post. We just want to get a feel of driving on a track and see if it's something for us to pursue.

If you have never been on track before, try Trackday Training Mondello organize them pretty regularly, give them a ring to check when the next on is on 045 860200. AFAIK they will provide helmets for trackday training too.
