Why do people who know the least shout the loudest

    Anyone?

Just had a guy onto me and he was irate because I told him that what he had asked me to do was not my responsibility.

He was rough as f*ck and he launched into a mind numbing loud tirade and made threats to me etc.

In the end to shut him up I did what he wanted, even though I shouldn't have. I'm annoyed at myself for doing so:(

Did you use those specific words, "Not my responsibility"? Because that'd be a pretty infuriating thing to hear from someone, and there are far better ways to say it that are less likely to cause conflict

If you could do the job, why not just do it in the first place instead of wasting your time in a shouting match. OK it's not in your remit, but chances are you're not going to have to do it for every customer.

Don't be one of those grouches that just grunt at people while doing the bare minimum. If you done it without question you might have felt good about doing a good deed rather than feel sh1tty about extra work.

Hardly fair to make the assumption that I am one of those "grouches". I go above and beyond my role all the time. I have zero way of enforcing what he wanted me to do.

I hate when people think if they demand it often enough, aggressively enough and loudly enough that you'll do their job for them.

Bullies get away with shouting at people because they've consistently learned throughout life that if they shout, other people get nervous and will do things to try and stop them shouting.

The most effective thing you can do is not react at all. Don't even talk to them. Just silence. Shouting into the void is very disarming, and they'll either go on a pointless rant (let them) or immediately stop and start trying to explain themselves more calmly.

Let the bully shout away and do nothing. If you're face-to-face, then just sit there with a blank expression and once they've stopped shouting, continue on as if they had said nothing.
If it's on a phone, then just go completely silent.

While it seems counter-intuitive, feigning complete calm and not even slightly reacting when someone is shouting is the easiest way to get them to calm down. Getting angry or upset will cause them to become angrier.

He got you to do what he wanted so that's why he was shouting at you.

If she was in the public sector she could have hit him with a cricket bat and still not get fired.

Damn, the situation would not have arouse anyway unless she did his crossword or interrupted him while he was trawling through donedeal.

OP I hope you realise how much you might be hurting the feelings of those who know the least but shout the loudest.

Up to now they have managed to cover over knowing less than everyone by shouting very loud. The loudest in fact. Now their cover's blown.

They have been cruelly and publicly exposed for what they are. And that has to hurt.

Dublin women, usually from the nicer parts, have traditionally been the ones screaming at me for some reason or other.

Why? In my case because I've insulted them or something. I suppose its a way of dealing with what you don't understand.

    Prefer Bertrand Russels:

The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent full of doubt.

It boils down to the intelligent knowing what they know and don't know whereas the studid don't know what they don't know :D
