    Hi guys,

I have a fairly new bike, just a few weeks old, and the chain is rusty already. Is it a cheap chain or I should have done something different? Bike wasn't cheap…
It's a mountain bike and I use it mainly on trails. I have hosed it down after every ride to get rid of the mud. I have dried it the best I could but never dried the chain, I didn't think I was suppose too.
    I appreciate any comments/suggestions.

    Thanks

    Yanu

I think drying the chain is optional, it can dry itself, but after a wash and when it is dry you should be applying lube. There are some spray on ones that are fairly fine and not great for wet weather. Then there is the more traditional oil type lube. The chain should not rust if it is well maintained, and that means keeping it lubed up. Remember to wipe excess oil off after lube to avoid lots of crap sticking to it.

There was a fair bit of salt on some roads over the last couple of months which means you have to be thorough when cleaning your chain. I also had a newish chain die on me just before Christmas for this reason, my fault for leaving it a few days before cleaning it after a long ride.

Cleaning technique I use is to take the chain off, put it in an old coke bottle quarter full of degreaser, shake thoroughly for a few minutes, dry the chain well, put it back on the bike, and oil it. I did have the park tools chain cleaner at one point which was great, but it went AWOL on me.

Mind if I ask how often would you reuse the degreaser? And what type degreaser? Thanks!

I don't re-use degreaser, no idea whether you can/should. Recently been using Jizer, mostly because its cheap and does the job. The little 500ml of bike chain specific stuff works our a bit costly.
