Working Maternity cover position

Hi there. I am currently nearing the end of a maternity cover position for another employee. I still have no word from my manager when the job will end. As I have a mortgage to pay I have been looking for full time alternative employment for when this job suddenly ends. I have now been offered a new job and they need me to start ASAP. The maternity cover position I am currently in has no fixed hours, there are rarely rotas up so I have no idea what I'll be working from day to day which is unacceptable. For the last few weeks I have only been given one or two short shifts. Any guide nice on notice period I'm required to honour would be great. I was never given a contract of employment. Many thanks. M

Have you spoken to your manager and explained the position yet? In any case, as you're leaving for full-time employment, I'd give a week's notice.

Yes, I have spoken to my manager. The job I am in had really become so casual. The new job needs me to start ASAP within days. In my current cover position I would probably only get one day of work next week.

I wouldn't class it as full time employment. I have only been given around 8 hours a week for the past month.

I'd just give them a week, and leave it at that then.

Thank you for your advice. Hopefully I can start my new job soon and be treated much better.

Finish up tomorrow. Start the new job on Monday.

Desperate to as the new job wants me now and it's a far better job. Have spoken to boss and agreed to work Monday as my last day. I don't feel I am being unreasonable with my request although I feel quite a bit of hostility towards me from my boss. At the end of the day I haven't been treated well and everyone needs to know when they're working and what wage packet they'll get at the end of the month. Thank you for your help.

What can your old company realistically do if you don't turn in on Monday ?

Grab the new job with both hands :)
