Yeah was there last January, anywhere from 15 to 20+ degrees. Can get a bit nippy at night, but nothing like here!

    Excellent price too!!

on turkisjhairlines site and for an extra 50/person you can avoid teh 9hr layover from 5am to 1pm in Ataturk aiport....Best 50 ever spent if your looking at it! only 1,30 layover each way!

Flights even cheaper now - grabbed two seats leaving DUB on Nov 19th and returning from HKG on Nov 29th, €386 each. Great deal, now to plan the holiday :)

    That's a savage price alright.

Is there enough to do there for 2 weeks?

Just saw on that site that there's flights to Kuala Lumpor from Dublin for €430.

So if anyone has been to Hong Kong then I'd love to hear your opinion on it

We did 5 days in Hong Kong and that was about right, definitely not enough to do in two weeks unless you want to travel to the mainland or Macau for some time.

I'd take HK over KL any day of the week, KL is hands down the most boring city I've ever visited.

That's an incredible price and Turkish Airlines are a really good airline to fly with. Been on some of their short haul routes and thought they were way better than most of the European national airlines.

Did three nights in hong kong, that was enough for me. For those prices I'd definitely go to KL and source a cheap air asia flight to somewhere else in south east asia.

AirAsia are doing £90 10 credit voucher things where you can hope around that area using the credits. Might be of value for people going to that area.

We always fly Turkish Airlines when going back to visit the wifes family, really really nice airline to fly with that. Would take them any day over Air France/KLM or Air China which they sometimes put you on instead.
Two weeks is about a week too long in HK. Even a week is stretching it to be honest. If I was doing this i'd get a mainland visa as well and take the HK metro to the Shenzen border and check out that as well, if are feeling adventurous take the train to Guangzhou from HK for the authentic Chinese experience, As soon as you cross the border you will see what i mean. Mainlanders look different (thinner in general and dress differently and have different hair styles) and behave different to HK people who are quite westernised.
The food HK is awesome and cheap :)

I went through skyscanner and got them for €383.36 each

Going for just over two weeks but going to see places in china as well

Our rough plan is to spend 5 days/nights in HK (maybe one of those in Macau), and the 4 days/nights in Guilin/Yangshuo. Have been to HK before and there's plenty to see and do, but really want to visit the Guilin area as well. Anyone been that way before?

343 euros if you book it on budgetair pt site

have read bad reviews of this website before. anyone here used them successfully?

Alright I went for it. booked the five star hotels in macau and china that were recommended on http://2015holidays.com/?p=1952 were cheap enough for my budget. there was also a link to the irish embassey visa application on there, but it also said that i could apply for a shengen visa for the little bit of china i would actually be visiting. has anybody done this or know if it is any cheaper than a normal chinese visa?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,094 ✭✭✭househero

hahahaha I meant Shenzhen visa. Not shengen. Im not an asylum seeker sneaking in through Calais

I know flights to Hong Kong are usually cheap but I bought today flight with Turkish Airlines for January 2016 for 357 euro per person (there are many dates, I only checked January 2016) , return flight from Dublin through Istanbul. I thought that is cheap enough.

Flights from Hong Kong to mainland China, Japan or South East Aisia are very cheap so thats easy way how to get cheap flight to Thailand, Malaysia, Phillipines or Japan.

It comes up as 387 on Turkish website but if you use skyscanner.ie and book through travel agent (and pay by debit card) you can get it for 357.

Anybody know anything about the shenzhen visa they are chatting about on that site? It looks like its less then half the price of a full china visa and I'm only staying in shenzhen

Lots to do in HK. With regards to visas for China mainland, it doesn't matter how far over the border you intend to travel, you will still get hit with the same visa rates. When I last went to the mainland it was roughly €60 for a double entry to China (not sure if you can get a single?). I stay with HK family when I visit and they are able to sort this for me but I remember having to have my photograph taken at the embassy office and they had my passport for the day also which seemed a bit daunting at the time.

Some suggestions for HK (not sure about your age but I always feel like a big child when I'm there!)

    - Mongkok: Check out "ladies market"/ shopping/ Langham Place
    - Sha Tin - 1000 Buddhas/ more markets
    - Northern Territory (not much up there except visiting relatives!) There's a few nice parks/ boat trips that don't require any visas
    - Kowloon Met: Views of Victoria Harbor/ More shopping!/ International Commerce Centre (Sky100 viewing lounge)
    - Hong Kong/ Central: More Shops!/ sight-seeing/ trams/ go to Victoria Peak at night for the best view in the world. Bar none.
    - Lantau Isalnd: get the cable cars (from Tung Chung MTR terminal) to see the big Buddha! Not to be missed!
    - Macau: Do not miss "House of Dancing Water" indoor show! Tallest bungee in the world (at one stage!)/ mix of Chinese/ Portuguese architecture is a sight to behold. Try the famous Portuguese tarts!
    - Shenzehn: Avoid. Mainly a poor city which will shock you (in comparison to HK). Can be a bit pick pocket too....better to go with Asian friend.
    - Guilin (pronounce "guy-lum" in Cantonese. A definite must do if you're venturing up in to the mainland. The scenery from this area features on some of the HK Dollar notes. Rtn tours are around €100 for 4 nights by bus! Bit of a trek on wheels though!
    - HK Disneyland
    - Ocean Park (much better than Disneyland IMO) go on Hallowe'en evening if you happen to be there on Oct 31st :)

I could ramble on & on! I usually go for 3 weeks but spend one of those weeks on a tour out of HK (either Japan/ S.Korea/ Thailand/ Taiwan etc). It's probably only possible to book these types of tours if you speak Cantonese as they probably won't suit you but if you have someone that can speak the local language then I can post info on where to book said tours (somewhere around Mong Kok as far as I can remember). They're usually pretty cheap...around €300 for 4/5 nights incl. rtn airfare out of HK & Accomm....tours are in Cantonese though which cracks me up after a bout 2 days!

By the way, those flights are way to good to pass up from Dub to HK. Bargain if you ask me.

We have decided to spend 2 days in Hong Kong. I never understand why people spend 18 hours in plane just to go shopping. I can go shopping in Dublin too ..

and than it's air asia flight to Bangkok ..

there must be some incentive from Hong Kong to bring tourists maybe?

I spent four days in HK before, lots to see and do - two days definitely not enough! That's like going to NYC for two days, you'll be left wanting more :) And I've also no interest in shopping.

I think this time we'll spend five nights in HK and then grab the bullet train to Guilin, spend a night there and then two more in Yangshuo before returning to HK and flying home. Didn't go outside of HK territory the last time I was there (2003), though spent a few weeks in northern China in 2007, so looking forward to seeing Guilin and environs.
