what sort of driving will you be doing?

My wife had the VW Up! for nearly two years ... more or less the same car. It was a capable little thing and easy enough to live with unless you either had more than one passenger or any sort of luggage / shopping requirement.

I am only 5"7 and if I was driving my 5 year old couldn't sit in the seat behind me as I had to have the seat that far back it was catching her legs . It is very basic inside . plenty of road noise and plenty of bare metal on the trim.

The brakes were not something that inspired confidence in me, sort of juddery when coming to a stop .. mentioned this to the dealer a number of times and was told that nothing was out of the ordinary .. but still I never trusted them 100%

The VW version of the satnav / bluetooth was absolutely brutal .. Maps and More I think it was called, the phone connection never worked, just randomly dropping despite numerous updates etc and the Satnav menus and buttons are just an accident waiting to happen.

It is quite frugal in slow stop start traffic and urban areas but get it up to motorway speeds and be prepared to watch the needle drop like a stone as the 35l fuel tank empties.

She got rid of it after two years as it just wasn't practical with two kids .. even as a run about.

Other than that it would make a decent city car for someone with no kids .. and you'll always find a spot it will fit in to for street parking.

One last thing .. if you drive it for more than half an hour at a time .. it gets very uncomfortable, no where to rest arms or feet .. the drivers door is more or less flush as it has just bare metal and nothing to rest the elbow on and on the floor pan no where to rest the clutch foot

It most definitely will not suit you. It is a car that is designed to be small for urban congestion not out and about in open back roads.

25km at a time would probably be alright .. but not ideal. personally i'd avoid it for your use.

Friend has a citigo, basically the same thing. Now she does a good bit of back road driving, and it wouldn't pull one up a gentle incline to save its life. That's with 2 in the car. Very light, boxy, cheap feel car, suppose you pay for what you get. The door cards don't even cover the metal, half of the panel is exposed as the colour of the car. On the 5 door, there is no windy back window, just one of those you lever out. You can feel every little bump and knock. I'd avoid for rural driving, could be ideal for start stop city driving mind.

They are a cracking little car. The engine likes being revved, it feels solid, is comfortable and belies it's small size when travelling in. It's infinitely preferable to a Dacia or the like.

If you are driving at normal driving speeds you won't see the fuel efficiency that you'd expect. At anything more than city driving it is thirsty (relevant to it's size).

There are plenty of frugal small cars out there that are better suited .. unless you are being drawn to the PCP option from the dealer? If that is the case . consider the Ibiza as it will serve you better in the long run.

there is also the skoda fabia - small(ish) and a slightly better level of finish and trim IMHO, with a wide range of engines too.

that said, I think the citigo is a very nice car, but I have only test driven them, not had to live with them, and the folks above do point out its better around town than anywhere else.

What about the Hyundai i10? Looks like a nice little car and gets great reviews.

Than the Seat? By the sounds of it it's a far nicer car to have to commute in.

i bought a mii (5dr sport 75bhp - silver) a month ago and love it. its a great little car both in and out of town, fun to drive. I drive mostly around town, shopping and commuting to work and I am averaging about ~5l/100km. It's quite comfortable to drive, the boot is reasonably spacious too.

what are you basing the TCO on?

You would probably find that a 1.4 more efficient than a 3 cyl 1L on your typical commute.

If you purchase 2nd hand and go down a couple of years the TCO would be much lower than a new Mii.

If TCO is your main consideration buying new isn't the best option.

They are probably in the top 3 ugliest cars you can buy new.

I drove the Mii most of the way around Ireland on ATWR in 2012 - About 1300 km over 3 days
I had the Sport version and despite my initial impressions it's a very capable little car.
The engine likes to be revved as mentioned above, it's got plenty of poke for the engine size and will travel on fine.
It's basic inside and a bit loud with road noise due to the lack of sound insulation but you'll get used to it quickly!

The driving position was ok for me, I'm 5' 11", but that left no room in the back, and the long hours spent in it didn't effect me too much tbh. I found it comfortable

I drove a good combination of roads and it can hold it's own on the smaller roads no problem, the suspension was a bit stiff, but I liked that in fairness. It was very easy on the juice over small R and N roads.
On motorways it was a slightly different story, it could get up to speed but felt quite light and drank petrol!

Overall it was a very fun little car to drive and for short trips on back roads, town driving it's ideal, especially if you like driving it on.
You could do a lot worse imo

A 1.4 would easily be thirstier.
