For an average 5.56mm or 7.62mm round, a fairly instant kill can come from a head, heart or spinal cord shot.

Anything bigger like a .5 round...mostly a bad outcome .

Base of the spine, knee cap.

depends on what part of the head, you can survive being shot in the head. Seen pictures of people who shot themselves in the face with a shotgun and survived. Most of the face was gone but they still survived. Lesson: birdshot to the chin is not a good idea.

I'd reckon one to the internal or external carotid (if a good enough shot) would do it. Blood loss would be fast, unconsciousness would soon follow then most likely death.
