A relative on mine found themselves on the dole with a small debt of currently about 2k. Interest has been stopped on the said debt, Debt has been paid weekly with what ever they have to spare. Issue is not none payment but expectation of reasonable payment by the bank.

Aib have now sent this to the debt collection department witch then has employed a Foreign debt collection agency to collect the debt or repayments. What are the legalities of this ? As the debt is in ROI and the company is registered and operates from the UK i.e. the North.

Payment continues to Aib, Will this just end up in court ? two jurisdictions with two different Debt collections laws.

The debt is in the roi and the collection agent surely has to obey the laws of roi in their actions

Aye, I just find it Very odd using a Foreign collection agency. Yes open borders but Different laws. Is this common practice with the Banks ?

Credit card holder is in ROI, AIB is in ROI, the debt collection agency could be from Outer Mongolia, they are bound by Irish Law if they operate within the jurisdiction of ROI.

Why wouldn't it be common language and all. Why not outsource it to the cheapest option.

But legal costs all that over stuff are in the ROI Can't see it being cheaper tbh.

Why not? Different pay rates, tax rebates etc. could make debt collection much cheaper from the UK than in Ireland. It is done regularly, nothing unusual about it.
