Council House, Exceptional Needs Payment

I am in the process of being granted a council house on medical grounds. This whole process has moved very quick, and if they council have their way, I will have the keys 4/5 weeks after they first told me about it. This house has no furniture, flooring, carpets, cooker, fridge, washing machine etc. I would be moving straight from my family home so don't have these things. Does anyone have any experience of applying for an exceptional needs payment from the social to cover these expenses? Thanks in advance.

You could get a lot of that kind of stuff free from websites like FreeTrade. So long as it keeps you going until you have time to save up to get stuff in the colours you want etc...

You will be asked to supply 3 quotes for anything you might need ,
But bear in mind over that last few years people don't get as much as they use to for various items

I would be happy with anything to contribute to be honest- I can try to get free things from family and friends like a sofa and a bed, but curtains, carpets and things like that will have to be gotten specifically for the house and it would take ages before I could actually move in.

Thanks for both of your help.

In terms of free stuff (whether from a website or family/friends), you can probably get furniture, appliances and things like crockery/cutlery etc...

Curtains come in standard sizes so free curtains could work.

Flooring is really the only thing that you have to get specially made - you could use big mats (if they were free) for a while to tide you over?

Freecycle might be worth a look. It's surprising what people give away sometimes.

It's usually quite quick if you get a letter from the council saying you have a house and that your getting keys soon then fill in the form saying what you need and they will get back to you quickly once you have the keys.
The quotes usually are only if your only wanting one item from them not for full house.
Good luck in your new home.

Thank you all so much. You have all been so helpful. I was expecting a bit of abuse!
I will definitely look into those websites. Exciting times ahead!

Freecycle is great! You'll have to hold yourself back from getting a grand piano just because it's free lol!

    Best of luck!

're taking ages to move into. we literally moved into a breezeblock with a couch and fold out Fulton type thing. will loved and got piece by piece over time including carpet, curtains, furniture and paint. I didnt have a bed for a year. hopefully you'll get as much as possible from free cycle etc before moving in but just to let you know it CAN be done. plus the coco will expect you to move in once you have the keys - something about not being allowed to leave the house unoccupied for more than x days per year.

    congrats on the house.
