Recently started a programme via my job that is funded by the british government (currently working in london) and they had me fill in this equal employment form and this is the list of ethnicities

Heh, I though I had misread it initially, but no, Irish is down as mixed race. That logic only works if you accept White -Gypsy irish traveller as the standard and mixed race Irish is a mix of traveller & something else which might not be something you'd want to think is the assumed status of all Irish people.

Its not the first time I've gotten a kick out of the weird seperation of irish in these forms in the UK, many years ago I remember it having "White - Irish", which got me curious what poor Samantha Mumba would have had to do if she filled in one of these.

but it stopped for a while replaced with "White - european" so I'm both surprised its popped back up and also the odd decision to make it mixed race

I find these entertaining mostly cause in the end Irish is not an ethnicity, it's a nationality and a culture yes, but not an ethnicity.

That's great news, now you use the race card if you get into trouble over there.

I was surprised to when I went to London last week to a doctors appointment, they had list on the form I was about to fill out of the nationalities I would be most comfortable with it if I had to be hospitalised. I thought in ultra PC UK, that the idea I'd asked this in person never mind official documentation was hilarious and incredibly ironic, having the opposite effect.

This really did seem being ultra sensitive/touchy feely going so far over the line that it loops back around in on itself leading to a pretty racist question

Well on this form maybe "mixed -irish"

I would put down "white-other ethnic group"

or just "prefer not to say".
    What race could "other" be?
    Inuit, native american?

We have to do all this total b*llocks in work as well. It usually says White Irish or White Other. Never seen Mixed Irish before, it must be a mistake.

    It's a typo.

Should read "White - Irish", as on UK census forms

I don't know what the criteria are for defining someone as a different ethnicity, but 5/10 times you can tell us apart from the English, so surely that counts for something?

Like when people say that because the Polish are white, that we're all the same race... I'd be a bit hesitant to go that far now...

Blitzkrieg: Mr Peterson I want to know why I was overlooked for promotion?
P: Well Blitzkrieg, you have the highest absentee rate in the company. You're
colleagues and supervisors all unanimously agree that you are grossly
incompetent and shiftless and you're seldom sober.
Blitzkrieg: Oh so this is a racial thing Mr Peterson. You've got a discriminating
problem with my mixed irish background and you want to hold
    me back
P: Eh..Blitzkrieg you're the new chief finance officer, I'll begin moving out of
    your new office straight away..

So, in other words, you don't know what an ethnicity is?

How is irish not an ethnicity? Tens of millions of people around the world claim to be of Irish ethnicity/descent.
