I am of course refering to the very handy Traffic Information button on my dashboard, which works perfectly well when we drive up North or across the water, but won't work here

    Why won't it work here?

It doesn't work because Ireland doesn't have any traffic announcement system :p

Yup and they are the reason I turned mine off. I'd be listening to good music then they'd come on chatting about how great they are for 5 minutes before getting to the traffic. So bloody annoying.

    Same as that :)

I never get stuck in traffic, got such a shock the first time TA came on (years ago) radio (blaupunkt) used to make a high pitched doorbell type noise when they came on.

traffic info generally on Irish radio is dreadful In Cork, they give out a list of the usual trouble spots being "slow" irrespective of whether they are slower than normal or not. Of no use whatsoever.

Live95FM do in Limerick on their 95.0 TX; not on their 95.3 relay in Newcastlewest. it's turned on and off by a set of tones embedded in the jingle

RedFM used to do it not sure if they still do it.

Beat 102 103 used to do it also but they don't these days (on the 102.2 Dungarvan one they don't anyway)

As far as the broadcasters are concerned, accidents and other traffic incidents only happen between 7am and 9am, and 5pm and 7pm.

Google Maps on your smartphone integrates live traffic data. Much handier feature.

    Handsfree?

Set your destination, even if its home, and it will include traffic in the calculations and time estimates. Allows you to reroute etc. Its been fairly spot on for me. Radio traffic is based on listeners texting in or the AA / Council () Google is based on hard data from the handsets we all carry.

This presumes you are in possession of a "smart phone" with Google maps + hands free kit turned on!

With TA of course all you need is to have your radio turned on and you can't miss the announcements loud and clear (in the UK)

Please tell us more about the Google maps option, like does it automatically give a verbal warning, and what detail is included etc etc . . .

I remember about 2 years ago I was driving to Belfast airport and the sat nav started telling me there was traffic ahead and on what roads. This was in a 15 year old 7 series. TMC in the North is part of the RDS specification and works along side codes on the sat nav disc depending on the car. Shame it doesn't work down here.

The last time I saw it do that was even cooler, when I was bringing it back through England in 2008, but then it was operating over the Trafficmaster system, which used to operate over GSM in the 2000s. Trafficmaster used to monitor traffic flow via equipment mounted to overhead bridges, and overlay it on the sat nav map on screen. Very cool stuff for the time.

Google bought Waze and have it incorporated into Maps. Used to find the navigation on Waze terrible so stopped using it and rarely drive in traffic so the warnings didn't really benefit me.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_message_channel

this is widespread in the UK

Quite useful too,my sat nav gets updated with traffic incidents/re routes etc as it happens.

The roads and general driving experience is still bad but it does help.

The "Waze" App is great, if only more Irish people used it! :-(

Works really well in the US I have to say. As you said, needs to be widely adopted to work.

Great for main roads but it diverted me the other day saying another route was 6 mins faster. Hit a massive queue that added 20 mins to the journey.
