Passat B6 rattle from the boot/rear area

On monday I noticed that when going over rough roads or speed ramps there is a rattle coming from the rear of the car. It does not sound like it is coming from the suspension but more like in the boot area.

I have removed the spare wheel, and emptied the boot but the rattle is still there. I have also fastened all seat belts and dropped the seats but no difference.

It is very annoying, car is only out of a full service 4 weeks and no issues were found at the time.

    Ideas?

Climb in and get someone to drive the car!

What type of noise? Is it a creak, squeak or knock? Did you have any work done near the rear like brakes or tyres during the service?

No, no work to the brakes or tyres. Pads are all ok. As weird as it sounds, the sound is like two dinner plates bagging together when I go over a bump. Like some item is in the boot but is not tied down so it moves around. I have looked under the car and nothing is loose or looks out of place. I have removed everything from the boot and banged things try to replicate the noise but no luck so far.

I no longer have a Passat but I have just had this exact same issue with my 10 month old Audi A4. Did everything you described before I eventually went back to the dealer and a mechanic came with me for a spin. When the rattle appeared, he asked me to release the boot and the rattle disappeared. Turned out there was a slight alignment problem with the boot door and they replaced a seal and quiet as a mouse since.
