I would highly recommend avoiding small cheap diesels unless you want to be landed with large repair bills very soon, for that money and that size engine petrol would be the way to go - and you would have lots and lots of choices.

Think I'd rather take the bus but if you're insisting on the 1.3 maximum there's only a small choice and all from Fiat or Opel I think.

Edit: for someone looking for a small diesel, you've the worlds most ironic username!

What year does it change from engine size to emissions for road tax?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,533 ✭✭✭✭Idbatterim

is the 1.3 or under for tax or insurance purposes? because if its tax, there is a minuscule difference on the old rate between most cc rates up to 1.5L

Tax Band Annual Half Year Quarter Year Arrears (Per Month)
    0 - 1000 199 110 56 19.90
    1001 - 1100 299 165 84 29.90
    1101 - 1200 330 183 93 33.00
    1201 - 1300 358 198 101 35.80
    1301 - 1400 385 213 108 38.50
    1401 - 1500 413 229 116 41.30
    1501 - 1600 514 285 145 51.40
    1601 - 1700 544 301 153 54.40
    1701 - 1800 636 352 179 63.60
What year does it change from engine size to emissions for road tax?
from 2008, dont assume that for the emissions based system is always cheaper though, even if it is, the difference will be negligible given than low cc engined cars are cheap enough to tax, even on the old system...

what kind of driving will you be doing and how many miles per year roughly?

forget this low tax nonsense by the way, most cars even on the old system were low tax IMO...

she's 34 year old lady, so doubt it would matter insurance wise if she had 1.2 diesel corsa or a 1.9 golf if both diesel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,533 ✭✭✭✭Idbatterim

no shouldnt make much of a difference, would also depend on how many years ncb she has...

avoid small diesels, doubly so if you intend to drive round town.

modern diesels are more unreliable then petrols, stuffed with expensive to repair ancillary systems, ( DPFs, EGRs, unit injectors, etc) . issues with timing chains etc.

    buy a modern small petrol

she has a 99 jap import yaris now, she does a good few miles 8 months of the year but then 4 months of the year she'd be just nipping around town mostly with odd long journey.
    What would you recommend?
Golf's seem to have a lot of miles for this money.

Any diesel with low tax for €4k or less is bound to have a fair bit of mileage on it. Good ones cost good money.

I would recommend something like a Suzuki swift, nice to drive, good bang for your buck.

you could get a 05-07 high-ish milage petrol for that money. Choose a brand with low spare parts prices.

Petrol engines give less issues, and are cheaper to repair.

avoid small "refined" diesels , with over 150Km unless you know precisely what has been serviced/replaced.

Few golfs on donedeal, very high miles of 140,000 for 1.9 diesel, would they give much trouble?
If it was a 1.2 corsa 2007, would you go the petrol or diesel option? My mam has the petrol and while it's a grand comfortable car, it's a bit lurch e, ie slow.

You budget will buy you a 10 or 11 year old Golf diesel at best. You have to be realist here, a 10/11 year old Golf diesel is going to have at least 140,000 miles on it. That's still average mileage for a diesel car of that age. Anything will low mileage is probably either clocked or outside your budget.

    Something like a Ford Fiesta:

I'd be afraid of old French cars with turbo diesel engines and lots of miles, the few corsas I saw on done deal were jazzy looking.
Any advice on budget, like should she try up to more to get decent car that'll do her longer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,482 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Corsas have their fair share of problems too. No 10 year old car is going to be trouble free.

A Toyota Yaris 1.4 D-4D would be a good buy but you will pay top money for them and they are not all that common.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,702 ✭✭✭✭BoatMad

Ive owned three old diesels and I'm only now learning my mistakes. in future it will be petrol if I am buying older higher milage cars. Old diesels make no sense, we have a bizarre view of diesels in this country. They are more prone to faults , costly to repair etc. Have a look at the costs of an EGR valve or a particle filter assembly , you'll be shocked

I know my dad has same car in petrol as my uncle has in Diesel, 1.6 petrol, 2 litre in diesel, they say running cost are about the same, more mpg for diesel, but petrol engine is lighter so less break pads, and cheaper to service and tax.
Comes down to which one is nicer to drive for them.
Suppose the old old diesels were more simple so maybe were still thinking of diesels in that light, rather than a comparably now 10 year old diesel that is way more complicated.

exactly , Im currently driving an 06 diesel with 185Km, lots of issues , expensive jap parts , my friends has a 02 petrol Stillo, yes now and then it fails, parts are cheap easy to get and cheap to repair . Im at three times his combined repair bills !!!

What about something opel with the 1.3cdti engine diesel either an astra h or corsa. While they are not that quick they would certainly be better than a corsa 1.2 petrol. The 90bhp is 6 speed too in the astra and they are not the worst engine reliability wise no dpf either.

Tdci/di mk1 focus should be well under 4k. 1.8 tax would be the downfall, 636 pa.

    Polos had a 1.4d from 2000
    Clios had a 1.5d from 2002
    Yaris had a 1.4d from 2001
    Micras had a 1.5d from 2003
Puntos (and maybe pandas?) had a 1.3d from 2005
    Corsas had a 1.3d from 2003

That's just off the top of my head, so may not be 100% correct. It should be handy to pick up any of these 12+ year old models for under €4k, just keep your vigilance and get any prospective purchase professionally checked.

Would 5 or 6 grand make a big difference?
