You can also go onto www.landdirect.ie and highlight the field. If it's a parcel on it's own the area will be given.

4840 sq yards in an acre. Seemingly some phones have Apps on them , but that is a bit beyond me! You could do it with a measuring wheel either. Does anyone know what the calculations for that way are ?

Need to be roughly square. Otherwise it'll be wrong. If it's not square, try and break it roughly into 2 areas. One main square and probably a triangle. Measure the square as you've described above. Then measure the triangle bit, half the base by the height add 2 areas together.

No, not by any stretch unless you have a consisten step and the field is very near rectangular.

The easiest way is to download google earth, zoom to your field and use the ruler tool to divide the field into a series of triangles that cover the full area. Get the length of the vertices using the ruler tool, selecting whatever units suit you. Calculate the area of each triangle and add them. Simples. If you want to pay for goolge earth plus there is a tool to directly measure areas.

Another option is if your field has had the same boundaries for many many years the old OSi maps have arceages marked on them. Go to http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,652191,668504,6,9 and zoom to your field.
