New Spraying Regulations

Do these new regulations apply across the board? I do a small bit of spraying every year - mainly docs and buttercup. From what I can see, I now need to complete a Teagasc course and will need my sprayer "NCT'd" in the not so distant future.
Am I correct in assuming the regulations apply to all farmers once you operate a boom of more than 30 metres?

More than 3meters and yep that's pretty much the case, there's a course for knapsack spraying aswell!

Have to have the course done, and be registered by October this year, and the sprayer needs to be tested by nov '16 which will last untill 2020 and then will need to be tested again

OOp's little typo there, I meant to say 3 metres of course!
I guess I'll have to just do the course so. The sprayer I have should be good. Its one of those cheapo Eastern European ones. Got it last year but its a right good job.

Its not in place just yet but it is recommended that you do the 2-day course as soon as possible. As far as I know, its going to be in place at the end of this year.
If you dont do it, I think you can still buy 1 litre Gallup or Roundup (or its equivelant) but you cannot buy any other larger sizes unless you are on the register.
I still have to do the course myself, as I sell the spray at work, but its a ridicolous idea in my opinion and just seems as a huge money racket. It will be very very hard to track the usage of sprays that farmers and gardeners use.

Anyone got a link to the course? I'm looking on tegasc.ie but can't see it.

We do one in Westport College of further education starting on Saturday 14 March, and running on the 21st and 28th March. 098 25241. There are other ones running nationally. I don't think Teagasc run them.

€200 plus €20 for exam if you have no medical card. There are only 4 places left. This is the third class we have ran.

Dad was in neighbours yard other day another neighbor drives in second biggest tillage operstor in wex. He's running spraying courses in his yard and was looking for more to fill up next run.
Dad said it to him about me doing it.
No way would he hear of it

Is the course a requirement for pesticides herbicides or what? Anything I seem to read only makes mention of pesticides.

Never mind I've managed to answer my own question, pesticides covers herbicides and fungicides etc etc

I did the practical part of mine last saturday at home with our own sprayer, was useful to get the sprayer calibrated and just check output against driving speed and pump pressure, but certainly wouldn't just pay the fee for the privilege of that. The assessor was telling me of two other fellas on the course who he went to and one of them is a contractor and the output of two of his nozzles was exactly half that of the other nozzles on the sprayer. Only putting out 0.6 of a litre compared to 1.2 per minute.
    Anyway I passed.:)

Pays to walk round and test with a jug every now and again presume blocked nozzel/line?
Ceramic tipped nozzles help to stop the opening going the other way also and wearing out faster.

What if you get a contractor to buy product and do the work?

From what I know you can buy the product yourself and get contractor to spray it or get him to buy and spray and you get a docket from him for all.

Did day one of the course today in ballyjamesduff and next Wednesday finish it off. Handy enough and a sound lad taking it to helps.

A bit confused by this new sprayer regulations. I have a little 5 litre sprayer, that cost me €10 in lidl. I spot spray nettles and thistles here and there. Do I need to do a course for this ?

You can buy small quantities of spray from shops for spot spraying small areas around your house/garden without the course.

If you are using a couple of liters to spot spray under wire, around yard etc, you will need the course and the identifier number that you get when qualified to buy the spray from your supplier.

You will also have to keep a record of sprays used around the farm and where you sprayed in case of a cross compliance inspection.

That's my understanding of it anyway.

Resurrecting an old thread but we're near the deadline.
    Many have this done?
Anyone know how much spray one can buy without the course?

Well it hasn't come in to effect yet so presumably you can buy without any bother.
Wonder could you buy that in the new year?

Never knew the deadline had not passed yet. Know a lad who works in Co-op, will just have to get him to buy it for me.

Technically he won't be able to buy it unless he has a professional user number.

I didn't think there was any buying restriction. . Only on using?

Have not done it myself but according to the paper, you get a designated number linked to pps in order to buy spray.
I'm sure there's a few here that have it done & would give better information

For the time being farmers with a herd number can still buy spray but that will be phased out and everyone will need to have done the course, 50% of the guys on the course I did were small scale livestock farmers.
