I saw this mural of Cork hero's and it got me thinking as to who would make a Tipp version?
It seems he included a famous person from each cateogory of:
    Politics,
    Athletics,
    Music,
    Comic presenter,
    Rugby,
    Soccer,
    Politics,
    Hurling
    Acting.
Which Tipp people would make the equivalent grade?
It would be great to get the artist to draw a Tipp version.

It's an awful looking thing - an eyesore.
I'm looking at people who don't look like themselves in that mural.

It is a terrible mural. Proportions of the people are way out.

Surely we can do better that that. Nearly all those listed have only had fame in the last 20 years. We have 800 years of county history.

    Politics... Lowry!
    Athletics...???
    Music...Louise Morissey
    Rugby... Denis Leamy I suppose
    Soccer... Shane Long?
Hurling... difficult to pick just one. Tony Reddin died during the week, lets say him. Lar Corbett from the modern game.
Racing... Vincent & Aidan O'Brien (adoptive citizens); Charlie Swan
    Diaspora: George Osborne!

Eoin Kelly was always better than Lar Corbett. Big fan of Lar myself but he wasnt as consistent as Eoin was even if his career sustained more longevity.
Would Shane McGowan not be a better choice for diaspora?

Leaving aside the corruption... the intrigue... the skullduggery, at least he was memorable, and resourceful.

We haven't been blessed with national politicians for Tipperary. Not in my lifetime, anyway.

Alan Kelly might prove himself yet. He's still young. Quite popular in my neck of the woods (but then, it's also his neck of the woods!)

Well straight off in terms of famous Tipperary Politicans these are the names that spring to mind.

    Thomas McDonagh (1916 proclamation signatory),
    Charles Kickham (Patriot and Literature),
    Thomas Luby (Fenian/IRB),
    Dan Breen (Republican),
    John O Leary (Fenian/IRB),
Brendan Bracken (WW2 Politian and Minister for Information),
    Maurice Davin (GAA founder),
    Sean Tracey (Republican)

Lowrys’ name historically would be nowhere near any of those listed above

Dan Breen was a very angry man.

If he wasn't a republican he would have been a criminal. Some say he was a criminal.

I'm not sure that a man who admired the Nazis should be anointed on our gable ends.

That Cork mural is an absolutely awful looking thing, I'd hate to see any wall in Tipperary lined with an eyesore like it tbh.

    Cant disagree with you there.
My point is about the list of famous people above. Lowry has only been famous for 20 years out of 800 years of county history and for all the wrong reasons.

yep. the assassination of two unarmed irishmen by fellow irishmen is something to be commended allright. iirc, the 'operation' wasn't sanctioned by the high command either.

Who's revising history? You might point out where I'm factually incorrect...I'd say I'll be waiting ;)

Just to enlighten you, that operation wasn't sanctioned by their superior officers. The initial goal was to get gel ignite which the 2 ric lads were transporting. The ric guys were unarmed. If I was one of the ric and the ira squad ambushed I'd put up my hands, there's the gel ignite and good luck. However, the 2 ended up dead. The incident caused outrage locally at that time. The only people who know what went on are long dead. However, knowing what happened regarding the numbers involved and who was armed and who wasn't it's safe to deduce the lads were assassinated in cold blood. Can you really see two unarmed lads ambushed like that putting up Resistance to a group of armed men. They were just 2 unarmed bobbys, Irishmen with families. Not Steven segal! You could make the argument that these lads were wearing the uniform of the 'crown' and taking the 'queens shilling'. I just think they were soft targets.

I'm not denying the incident is seen as the spark that lit the fuse of the war of independence. I just don't count that incident as heroic. Therefore I don't see the idea of putting their snouts on a mural as being justified.

You wouldn't consider the men who signed the proclamation- Pearce et al.. Senior officers
There was a mix up there. Complete disorganisation. No Twitter back then!
Plus the aims were a little different as were the opponents;)

Coincidentally, both Charlie Swan and George Osborne's great grandmother, Kathleen Whitfield, were born at Modreeny House.

I worked for the Swans for years, and heard many interesting stories, but not that George Osborne was a relative.

Nobody ever mentioned that man of dubious repute!

Are you sure the great-grandmother was born at Modreeney?

I assume she was Theresa's grandmother as I don't believe Donald Swan had any Tipp connection.

I got the impression Donald Swan bought Modreeney quite by accident.

I would have sworn it wasn't inherited..?

Dragging the thread off topic a bit but some of George Osbournes ancestors are also buried in the Osbourne Crypt in Killaloan cemetary outside Clonmel afaik
