Hi guys, I thought it might interest some posters here, the NCT is looking for fully qualified mechanics.

Fully qualified eh? But there are posters on here that say they aren't mechanics at all. Are we to believe they are talking from the depths of their anus' ?

That's like expecting tech support staff in call centres to have IT qualifications.......

Surely NCT testers are looking for the same set of issues on very car they test, all day every day. Couldn't anyone be trained to that?

I believe they are also accepting deaf, dumb and blind people. The only requirement is being able to hand over a random pass/fail sheet.

NCTS is an equal opportunities employer

    :pac:

When was the last time you seen a lady inspecting your car, or a bloke behind the reception for that matter?

Bloke behind the counter in my local centre. In my memory of visits to same local centre I have never once seen a single female employee. Not saying they don't employ them just saying I cannot recollect seeing one.

Well I certainly remember handing my driving licence to a bloke behind the counter when last at the NCT. I'm sure if any qualified lady mechanics apply for the job that they have every chance.

I too handed my license to a bloke behind the counter. A few minutes later, he was inspecting cars.

There was a female tester at Limerick NCT centre last time I was there

Handy enough number I'd say but repetitive so could become boring after a while

They (and everybody) just have to say that now a days. Means precisely F-all in the real world though.

do you really have to be a fully qualified mechanic?

surely someone technically minded could be trained into it, shouldn't take that long to get the hang of it

its a repetitive job i'd think most mechanics would find it boring and unchallenging

To be fair lads, I think to train a non mechanic over a qualified mechanic would be one hell of an expensive training session, not to mention the amount of time it would take.

I know alot of the stuff they do is run of the mill but I'm sure there are many aspects of the job where you need to have a mechanics mind about it, not just be trained in how to do the test.

My brother works for the NCT, anyone who is a tester was a fully qualified mechanic before they went for the NCT roles. They simply dont hire anyone for the Testing roles that wasnt a mechanic before.

They have non mechanics checking taxis are up to scratch though as its a checklist.

You are right, it is very repetitive. But, once you are permanent, the job is very secure. Which a lot of mechanics find very attractive.

Remember seeing a woman in the test center in toughers business park too. Can't remember if she was in the garage or just behind the desk.

I'm surprised to hear that they're qualified mechanics considering that one of them couldn't open the bonnet of my car and one couldn't close the bonnet properly (two separate tests on two different cars)!

Whats the car? is the bonnet release in an unusual place? is there something maybe non standard about yours?

Honda Civic. I could sort of let them away with that as the lever was a bit stiff, but not closing the bonnet properly was pretty unforgivable, IMO.
