Picked up on this noise in the celica the other day, not a noise i'd be too familiar with. hopefully i haven't been duped, i'm confident i haven't, but if i have i just want to rectify it quick.

it's a sort of fast paced but not very loud rattling noise maybe best described as for example a washer rattling on a bolt or something along those lines. it only happens under a very strict set of conditions:

    - only under engine braking/ deceleration
    - only above 3500 rpm
    - only while in gear (any/ every gear)

under 3500 rpm it virtually instantly disappears, even the slightest application of throttle and it will disappear and pressing the clutch or shifting to neutral will make it disappear.

there are a hell of a lot of threads online about this already. i've read of people replacing clutch kits, re conditioning gearboxes and replacing timing chains and still having this noise. the only thing people seem to have in common is that nobody claims to have had a breakdowns as a result of it. a lot of people say it is the exhaust manifold heat shield vibrating but this seems too convenient. it's rather hard to access but i've given mine a quick prod and it seems firm.

anyway, i can't trust it, yet anyway. would love a few opinions. here's a quick video, it's best heard between 9 and 12 seconds although it's hard to hear anything over the rain .

edit: actually no video. if anyone could tell me how to upload one, that'd be great. tried attaching a file to this post, waited 25 minutes for a failed message and had similar results using tinypic.com and pb. it's an mp4 file.

took virtually an hour, but here it is :pac: 9-12 seconds is the crucial part although it does do it again @ 33 seconds, will try get a better one tomorrow when the weather isn't as noisy. it's much more audible in real life.

I had one where the aux belt tensioner would make a rattle noise on liftoff can't really hear your noise with the rain, is she a vvtli? I recommend also changing the cam pulley bolts at some stage as they are prone to shearing off.

Is it to do with the vvtl mechanism switching off maybe. I know the mothers megane makes a strange noise when you lift off with the revs over 3.5k or wherever the vvt is engaged. Doesn't make it below that engine speed. Perfectly normal for the meganes to do it afaik. Thought there was trouble ahead when I heard it first!!

Hard to make it out from the video but the way you described it sounds like what mine does too. Got the same list of possibilities when I tried googling it, and I haven't had time since I got it to investigate properly(other than checking the heat shield too). The tensioner mentioned above sounds like a good place to start though.

Yeah I've heard the same noise from those meganes - the 1.4 at least. I think the 1.6 can give variator trouble?

TFB - I can't make out anything in that video only you may have someone from Limerick in your boot making "yupyup" noises everytime you change gear.

ok, so i made 2 more videos with my limited equipment. it still doesn't sound as severe in the videos as it does in real life. just to reiterate, it's like a rattle/ vibration on deceleration.

best heard in this video (driving kind of hard in second gear, high in revs, ight on the throttle) from 25 seconds onwards, but it can be heard at any stage during the video to me.

you can hear it best in this video @ 11 seconds and again @ 23 seconds. (this time i was in 4th gear, burying the pedal)

    Cannot hear anything suspicious. :(

You won't be attending motors meet next week, will you?

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck sake... i know in the video it sounds like a throaty deceleration but in reality it's a rattle :(

i haven't even checked into the meet thread, i'l have a look now :)

    I hear it!!!!

Sounds a lot like a loose heat shield to me. Might be different in real life though...

I can hear it in the second video clearly! That last few years driving diesels has me tone deaf though! I'll record the megane now and stick up a video see if it sound similar.

    Melter!

I know my old 4age 20v used to have a rattle from the vvt pulley not unlike what you're describing, but, it was on acceleration from about 3.5k to "changover" at about 5k.

Not sure if a chain engine carries a similar system but it's something that popped into my head

Could, as said be a frequency related rattle from a shield too..
