If a person is due to work 2-10pm of a particular shift week but because of a period of shutdown all employees must be off site by 4pm on the Friday of that week , can the employer make one come in earlier on the Friday so they get the full 8 hours out of you or do they need to let you come in at 2 and finish at 4pm and give u the rest as approved business absence ?

    How much notice was given?

If no notice was given and they just called and said "come in now" then I can't see them having any legal footing.

Just tell them your looking after a kid til 1pm and can't come in til your regular hours.

    .

"Employee Rights"? "Legal footing"? Dear God OP, it's one day, "that Friday" you posted that everyone has to be off site, presumably while essential maintanence/refurbishment is done. Is this what it has come to? It's a Friday, you're finished early, go enjoy the long weekend.

Your under no obligation really if they only rang the morning of your shift and asked you to come in.

So they rang you at 8am on the relevant Friday to come in immmediately and do the eight hours?

I think they would have to give at least a weeks notice in my experience.

Aside: 2-10pm, God id love to have those hours. Miss shift work so much :(

If it's for this Friday and they notified you today, I'd say that's sufficient notice. If it's a once off, it shouldn't be a big deal.
