Egress hinges on bedroom windows

I read someone suggest that egress hinges should be added to all bedroom windows.

I was wondering what the reason for this would be, if it's a good idea, and exactly how an egress hinge differs from other hinges?

    Thanks!

An egress hinge will allow you to fully swing open the window, so that (if the window is wide enough) someone can get through the window in case of an emergency (fire, usually).

Usually, though it depends on the hardware you choose, the hinge is restricted in normal opening to prevent someone falling out, but you just press a button on the hinge to allow it open fully.

Whether it can be retrofitted depends on your windows, and you do have to be careful in specifying the model you want that it suits how you use the house and the windows.
