Honda C-RV Problems.

I bought a 2005 2.2L CDTi Honda C-RV last year. It had been poorly looked after and needed a bit of work to get it back to it's best.

About a week ago a really loud noise began in the engine area. It was a bad grinding noise that sounded like a bearing on its last legs. I don't use the car for work so it wasn't driven much since the noise began. On Wednesday I had to take a short journey of about 4 miles, got there ok with the noise coming and going.

On the return journey though, the battery light came on and went off a second later. I though to myself that it must be the alternator bearing that's gone then. By the time I got home the headlights were getting dimmer and the wiper was crawling across the windscreen. A check with a meter confirmed that the alternator wasn't delivering any voltage to the battery.

So yesterday I took the alternator out and sure enough the diode pack is fried, I've ordered a new one and hopefully that'll be that. But the bearing is fine, smooth and no noise whatsoever, the non-reverse clutch on it works fine too.

So further investigation lead me to the automatic tensioner pulley which sounds very rough and is no doubt where the noise is coming from.

    So to the questions:

    1. Have I just been extremely unlucky to have 2 parts fail within days of each other or could there be a connection ? The belt looks newish with no signs of wear or cracking.

    2. A replacement tensioner is over 200 euro for a cheap one, the recommended one is closer to 350 !! As it's only the pulley that's faulty would it be ok to just replace this ? Or is it best practice to replace the whole tensioner ?

    3. While all this was being done I discovered why the A/C wasn't working. The small radiator (condenser ?) has a hole in it meaning no gas. Does anyone know where I could buy one of these in the Dublin/Leinster area ?

Thanks for reading and any help appreciated.

    Ken
