Trade In Advice

Hi lads, just a quick question. My parents are looking to change cars, my father has sorted an Octavia by trading in my mothers car and was hoping to trade his car, a 09 BMW 318d ES with 118k miles on it for a small car for my mother. They've been going around the dealers locally trying to get a decent price for it but are generally only being offered about 7 or 8k trade in value for it. Mother isn't overly picky about what car she gets but seems most are offering low amounts. Is this the going rate for such a car? I see them selling for around 13-15k on various sites so was assuming they'd get around 11k for it though my knowledge of the dealer trade in process is minimal anyway so I can't say if they're getting a bad deal or not.

He has it advertised to sell privately but would prefer to trade it as he doesn't really want the hassle of selling privately, hasn't got any calls about it in any case.

    Thanks for any help given.

Are the ES models going for that price or are they SE and Msport?

What car and it's value are they trying to trade the 3 Series in against? If they are trying to trade down to a car of not much more value then a garage will drop the trade-in value of your car as they want to make a profit on the deal. Unless they are buying brand new the important figure to concentrate on is the cost to trade-up price rather than trade-in price of the old car.

Also it's a basic spec ES model. I sold a high spec 2008 M Sport over 2 years ago for €15k. I think he is dreaming a bit asking €12,500 for it privately.

Here is a better spec SE with a 12 month warranty asking €11k:

Another one here with leather seats for not much more:

They're looking for a new car or a 141/2. They've been to Renault, Peugeot, Hyundai and I think Mazda but haven't got a decent trade in offer yet.

I agree that he might be looking for a bit much but he's just basing it on what he saw almost identical cars up for sale on donedeal and adverts. He'd take 11k for it i'm sure but he's worried about time wasters if he puts it any lower. I'll pass this on to him and see will he lower it.
