what hotel would people recommend in the city centre, need something ok & sensible to nice, no need for 5 star but nice and comfy at the same time

and any recommendations for nice restaurant in city centre

and probably best get breakfast in hotel I suppose

(never been to prague before hence all the questions)

I stayed in the two golden keys - very basic, money was better spent on hookers and beer.

Nice Argentinian steakhouse on Wencelas Sq. On the right down near the entrance in way to Old Town.

Stayed in massive apt for 4 nights on Wencelas Sq. Very good value.

KK Hotel is pretty good value with a great breakfast. It is walking distance from the main train station. But be aware there is a couple of adult night clubs in the area so ask for a room to the back of the hotel. We bought a 3 day sub way pass but the city is pretty small and you can walk most places within 15-20 minutes. J

Avoid the Taxis drunk. Expect to end up going the scenic route to somewhere no where near where you wanted to go with the scenic route taken back to where you were followed by another scenic drive to somewhere no where near the previous places.

Oh and change your currency at home. The bureaus are a complete rip off there.

Winceslas Sq. and environs is actually a bit boring - you could be anywhere. I prefer Old Town - better pubs, better restaurants, better music, pretty much zero hustlers.

@Stojkovic - why on earth would you go to an Argentine restaurant in Prague? If you're travelling to a new city, presumably part of the experience is the food.

Try Priceline for a hotel. I got a hotel for €128 for 3 nights. After bidding on Priceline the hotel we got was Hotel Ametyst. It was very nice and included breakfast.

Try eating out in Prague 2 (it's only a few minutes walk from the old town). It'll be cheaper than the old town. One night myself and the girlfriend got a 3 course dinner and 2 drinks each for €30.

You can get a public transport pass at the airport for 3 days for about €10.

Perhaps Stojkovic has hit on a gem, but I'd personally run a million miles from an Argentinian Steakhouse situated close to a tourist centre anywhere in Europe.

I stayed a night at the Best Western Meteor Plaza for €55 p/n in November last - it's a great location right beside the Powder Gate. Rooms were a little tired perhaps but staff were good & on-site parking was a bonus. I'd have no qualms staying there again tbh.

As mentioned above, Priceline's definitely worth a shot too.

We were there 4 nights and went there once. I just thought it was the best steak Ive ever had. And 8.5% beer.

Stayed in the Design Metropol for 4 nights at €69 a night last year, included a free buffet breakfast.
Room was fine, if a little small, but location was perfect, 5-10 mins walk to Wenceslas sq, old town sq, Charles bridge.

Also, skip the international restaurants and have some Czech food. The ghoulash served in a hollowed out loaf or koleno/pig knuckle is fantastic.

How much does it cost for a taxi from the airport to the city

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,816 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

Taxi is like 20 or 30 quid

Theres a bus that goes from the airport to dejvice station, it costs €1-ish and takes like 30 mins. Go downstairs at the station to the metro and its only 3-4 stops to Wenceslas square. Your bus ticket is valid for the metro journey too

Picasso Apartments on Wenceslas Square, ealking distance from everything, quiet, very clean, super fast wifi and was cheap between 5 of us. worth mentioning it.
There was a restaurant under the apartments, was located just 20 yards of the street, it would go unnoticeable .
Great great food at the right price. We were sorry we didn't go there sooner!
Located on the opposite side of the road to the Jalta hotel.

I'd recommend the cocktail bar on the top floor of the Hilton for a couple of drinks. An average of about €8 per cocktail for premium spirits and 5 star service to go with it. This may be more expensive to other bars in the city but the views are fantastic the drinks delicious.

I like Butchers Grill and Pasta for steaks. Really nice and a great wine list.

Went to visit a friend who was living there and she said to always always ring a taxi firm, never ever flag one down on the street. lot of cowboys. beware.

beautiful place though. Just walking around is so enjoyable. have a great time!

Had another stay in Prague late last week & actually tried booking the Marriott apartments suggested by a previous poster.

As there was no availability, I headed for Jury's Inn & found the place pretty decent - good sized rooms, prompt & painless check-in, free WiFi & about 6-7min walk to Náměstí Republiky - €66 p/n.

Wenceslas Square is full of dodgy people and clubs. Old city lots of great bars and restaurants. The Hilton old city is amazing if you want to stretch a little bit.
