I want to change the gearox oil in the celica. (2002, 1.8 6 speed).

the manual says you can use 75w90 GL-4 or GL-5 and leaves it at that.

having read this thread ( http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=93727421 ) i am not too sure how my car would happily take either when they sound so different. it also doesn't stipulate semi or fully synthetic.

i have bought 75w90 semi synt GL-5. would this be ok?

also, on the off chance does anybody know is the 2zz thermostat is the same as a 3zz and 4zz and 4e etc. i have one of those here and would like to use it.

    cheers :)

    Better go fully synthetic.

    Bought mine here.

Use semi-synth as a flush - fill in, drive a week or two and replace. :)

Yep, thermostat is the same in ZZ, MZ, UZ and AZ engines (not 4E nor 4A engines though), look:

Class, one less expense so with the thermo :P there's a fair bit of stripping to reach it though. Alternator and inlet mani off i believe.

Sick, i just bought 3 liters of semi synt in halfords when i was away the other day to change the box oil. The nearest halfords is 40 miles away. Damn.

Change it anyway, as it probably never been changed. You'll be surprised after those 2 weeks of flushing.

And Motul in after that. :D

You sure you need 3 litres of oil? Well, maybe. I've no manual to your gearbox.

Dunno what effort is necessary to change thermostat either. :o
