20k for a 6 year old 3 series sounds crazy, I would go for the Golf GTD in 5 door.

I love my BMW but I wouldn't touch a car with the N47 engine in it with a bargepole.
    Better off with the Golf.

To be honest if you have 20k wouldn't it be better to get a deal on a car like 2.0 tdi mk7 Highline golf? I had a go in one recently and felt much better then MK6 GTD.

Btw both cars that you are interested are out of manufacturer's warranty. imo new car = less trouble :)

Have they massively dropped the price of new Golfs?

    Nope

318d is a bit under powered but not bad. A gtd is several classes below. Personally I wouldn't utter the two in the same sentence.

The N47 is is excellent as diesels go. Revs and pulls unlike any of the diesel VAG tosh.

What kind of deal would one have to do to get a new golf worth over 30k for 20k?

You can get a good one pre registered for 27k.Seen frankkean had offer.

Just saying if I have 20k I would give it towards new car and rest repay monthly. Defo they would give a good deal.

I'm not a fan of the VW Golf but I despise the low-end 3 series BMWs, so in this case I'd go for the Golf...

Hey folks, I'm finally in a position to get a car I like again! As the title suggests, I've pretty much narrowed it down to the two cars above (yet to drive either) The bmw would be from a main dealer strictly for the warranty as I'm fully aware of all the issues involved with the n47 engine. Something like this is on my list.. http://m.carzone.ie/used-cars/BMW/3-Series-318d-M-Sport-Saloon/141114236407996650
For similar money, I can get a 2011 gtd... http://m.carzone.ie/used-cars/Volkswagen/Golf-GTD-2.0-TDI-MANUAL-6SPEED-FWD-170BHP/144114240867905360
Just wondering what are people's thoughts?!!
    Thanks.

Spoke to a guy last night that got an '11 318d from conlons for €22k.

It will be much easier to sell the golf than a bmw with n47 so take that into consideration. Personally I'd get the golf.

Considering dealers are asking 20k for 6 year old detuned N47 cars with a straight face, I'd say that's rubbish.

    Sorry but I have disagree.

I'm on my second N47 engined BMW and had a VAG CR 2.0 TDi in between. The N47 is noisy, unrefined and has questionable reliability. The CR TDi on the other hand, while not bulletproof either is smoother, more refined and quieter. It's a pity I couldn't have swapped my old CR TDi into my current F10.

I dont have the link. I'll post it later if I find it. But the n47 is actually rated at a lower db than any of the tdi stuff. Your vag car just had more bulkhead insulation. If you put a tdi into your f10 it would be noisier and of course being a tdi drive like a tractor.

The F10 has very good insulation which is why you cannot hear the N47 that much from the inside. Listen to it at idle or low speed with the window down and it's a different story, it clatters. The old PD TDi engines were indeed rattly but the CR units are much more refined.

Your devotion to the N47 engine is apparent from this and some of your posts in other threads but I'll stick to my original opinion based on experience of owning both.

For the sake of a couple of hundred in motor tax would you not just go for a proper 325d or 330d

A proper 6 cylinder engine with loads of grunt and piece of mind as youll have none of the timing chain issues associated with an N47 engine!

If i was in the market for a post 08 3 series i think i would just stretch my budget out for a proper one

EDIT: Just check the links. Wow! €20k would land you a mint 330d with iDrive and leather from the UK!

People really are blinded by co2 and tax brackets here

330d would be amazing but I'll be trading my own car in so Id imagine it'll be outside budget. I actually spotted a 2009 330d m sport when passing conlans today so will keep any eye on the web for that as it's not up for sale yet. Otherwise, will likely go for the golf. Thanks for the advice lads. Will update in a couple of weeks when I get sorted!

That BMW will have a 2 year warranty so its not all bad news.

Why is that good? It only means that if it breaks in two years it might be fixed. Won't help with selling it after the 2 years, especially if the chain hasn't been replaced in that time.

Dropping 20k on a paddyspec de-tuned N47 is madness! Regardless of warranty!!

Even with the exchange rate the way it is, you could find yourself in a fully spec'd out 330d from the UK with some change left over!

Have you looked at Mazda 3 2.2 185?

    Worth a drive.

You could easily get one for under 15k inc vrt from the uk

    http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201502201096670/sort/default/onesearchad/used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew/radius/1501/maximum-age/up_to_4_years_old/fuel-type/diesel/usedcars/postcode/m52ty/make/mazda/page/1/engine-size-cars/2l_to_2-5l/model/mazda3?logcode=p

Noticeably quicker than the Golf too.

While your over in the uk, you coud get bbr to tune it up for you :pac:
