Neither. You should be looking at a petrol car. You'll get one with lower miles and less chance of something expensive going wrong for similar money.

i've never had a ford. but i've owned 3 leons from new each time. all petrol 1.6.
i never had any issues with them bar a bulb going in one front light regularly. good cars, but last one i had was an '06 and the road tax was too much for me so sold and bought an ibiza.

sorry can't be of much help. good luck in your purchasing:)

Any other opinions on the cars that I am looking at???

My mum has a focus 1.6tdci and it's a really nice car to drive. She has had several problems with the engine though and has broken down 3 times in the last year. It's a shame really. My sister has an Octavia 1.6 tdi and the Focus engine is much better in my opinion. The Octavia seems well enough built but a few bits of the interior have broken and it is not abused at all. Reliability wise the Octavia hasn't given any bother.

the 1.6 diesel Focus has a Peugeot engine which has been known to be tempermental, maybe try the Ford 1.8 diesel

They still use the PSA unit up to the present.

I was informed by a few mechanics that the PSA engine is fine if its serviced with proper parts and oil. If it isn't regularly serviced it can give bother, but I suppose all engines are the same?

@Mervyn, you say your mother had issues with the 1.6TDCi engine. Can I ask how much mileage she would do? And what sort of driving, city or motorway?
