    Fellows of the cycling forum,

I am currently doing regular sessions of 30km taking me in and around an hour, mostly flat, the off hill.

I signed up for CAS, doing 3 days of it in the middle somewhere. I was wondering what sort of pace it usually runs at and how I should tease out my distances between now and then?

I'm not currently training as I'm abroad for a few weeks but when I get home there's a 100-ish-km route I have on the agenda.

should I juts push out and do 50km for a week or two and then 70 and then 100?

If I'm comfortable tootiling around 30km in about an hour should I grand doing CAS? I'm imaging it's going to be about 20km/h cursing speed for that?

First off CAS is a great even and welcome on board.

You'll be fine if you can do 30km on your own now.

The lead car at CAS sticks at around 20km/h and nobody goes passed it. The idea is to raise awareness and as such marshal it fairly strictly. When riding in the peloton you'll find yourself free wheeling and on the breaks more than anything. On occasion the group may split on a hill but they usually have rest points midway at the schools the give talks in so the most you'll be travelling will be 50km (usually less) without stopping.

There's no real need to be doing long distances but time in the saddle will get you prepared for 4-5 hours sitting on it which is usually the biggest issue for people. As I was saying it's not a fast event but it's a long day in the saddle and even longer if it's raining.

Good Luck with it. I'll be out for a day or two myself.

Oh I'm well aware of it not being a race so I really wasn't worried about the pace, I know I can hold 20km all day and I know it stops in Athlone, Nenagh, and somewhere between Limerick and Tralee too sso wasn't too worried about that either.

But yeah, the time in the saddle is my main worry. I think I'll need to invest in some good bibs and gloves!

The best investment any cyclist can make and a saddle that suits you. :)

I have my saddle sorted, was the first thing I did when I got the bike, did a few tests, lbs had a selection of saddles you could borrow for a few days with a deposit to help make your mind up. Tried a load of high end ones and ended up going for a cheaper one which suited me better at the recommendaiton of one of the staff!

Good stuff sounds like you're all set so.

Try get out a often as you can between now and then and maybe sign up for a sportive before hand. If you haven't cycled in a group before it's a bit of a different ball game. There'll be a number of people on the CAS that haven't cycled in a group before so you'll want to keep your wits about you at times.

Hopefully the weather plays ball this year I got very lucky on the first 2 days last year but I believe the weather went down hill after that.

I raced a bit as a kidlet (mtb and road) and go for group spins with friends in the summer so riding in a bunch isn't completely alien to me, I just have to make sure I'm not stuck in the middle of a bunch of wobblers on hybrids :P
