    Hey Lads,
Decided to get back into fishing lately but as i havent got a car ive decided to take the plunge into freshwater but seeing as ive never fished rivers before have no idea what im doing.
Did some research online and youtube but havent gone out yet, probly going to start spinning and dead baiting as ive no idea about fly fishing, and will be aiming to fish for spiecies that i dont need a license for as id rather build up some skill before spending a few bob to catch a salmon and come out the end of the season without a bite.
Is there any good spots around the lee fields i could fish without being a club member, or if theres any club members would ye mind if i tagged along one day as an onlooker to see if i could pick up a few tips as im sure there wouldnt be any clubs out there that would accept someone whos never fished a river.
Any tips and info welcome :)
    Blake

Lee club is notoriously hard to get I'n too , as for the Lee fields I always had a good day trout fishing but it can be slow at times its mostly slow deep water

Minnow , worms even cheese can be good fished on bottom or float

Another option is fish the dam for trout think it's 5/10e some big trout up there , every year there is a few 5lb plus trout caught mostly by salmon anglers

Ah I wouldn't mind it being a slow stretch as long as I can get a bit of casting practice and get a bit used to the river,
Is it ok to fish the length of the fields, the public walking part I mean?
Ya had planned to take a trip up to the dam over the summer months, would you use the same bait up there as you suggested for the rive?

All that public walkway is free alright.Once you get used to it you should head away up the dam, its better fishing there.

Ya I'll give the dam a shot when I've a bit of experience.
Is it just the lee fields that you can fish without a permit??

You know the grotto on the Lee road, opposite side of the river from the walkway? From just a bit above that and down is free.Stick between there and the shaky bridge.

Was fishing for trout by Inniscarra graveyard recently and got warned off by a member of Cork Salmon Anglers Club. He said I couldn't fish on that stretch of river. If I was caught by the bailiff they would take the gear and I'd have to go to court and fined if prosecuted.

The Cork Salmon Anglers own the rights to one side of that stretch of river and the other side is owned by the Lee Salmon Anglers from what I remember. ( correct me if im wrong )

Btw if the bailiffs do catch me fishing around here, all they will find is a small trout rod, 4lb line and cheese as bait. From previous experience most Salmon anglers would leave you alone but some of them can be obnoxious twits.

Is there a legal way to fish for trout in this area besides paying for a Salmon license which I have no interest in catching.

Sorry OP for hijacking the thread but I think it could be relevant to you also.

Even having a salmon licence won't let you fish out that way.As you say, the club's own that water and fishing is for members only if that's the way they want it. Your better off to just go down around the free parts or pay a 10er for an evening ticket out inniscarra.

I know it's not ideal but it's just the way it is.

The thing is with salmon anglers is they pay stupid money each year to fish there and when they arrive and see someone else In the spot who didn't pay they can get fairly cranky which I suppose ya can't blame em

From seeing people trout fish on my water on the river blackwater they just stay away from the main pools as such and there is never a problem

If you fly fish you can get a trout permit off the lee salmon anglers for 30 euro a year good value
The fishery board won't take your gear if your fishing for trout, they will only take it if your fishing illegal
It's not as hard to get into the salmon clubs anymore because of members dropping out it does create spaces so you should ask if your interested

I was told that my gear could be taken by the bailiff because I was fishing in this area which appears to be slightly untrue. ( if I am reading the law right ) According to the inland fisheries website I do not need a license to fish for trout in the republic.

As long as I can prove I am not fishing illegally for Salmon and not trespassing on private property then in what way could a fella be prosecuted?

Well if the club really wanted to prosecute you they will but I can tell you now they won't go to that trouble if your only trout fishing
I've seen many lads trout fishing and nobody says anything to them unless they are fishing a pool a salmon angler wants to fish
All along the regional park there are rod rests that the lads use for trout fishing so they must fish it regularly
