Home Media Server

    Hello,

Skimmed through an article recently where I guy described his home server set up. He was doing things like recording live TV through a capture card to be streamed at will around the home, but also had a VPN setup whereby he could do the same out of the house.

While I said to myself, "oh wow cool what a guy", I have no experience with any of the above. It wasn't until coincidentally later that same day at work a guy was describing his own home media server that the idea took root in my mind and I've wanted to learn how to do it since.

Beyond the obvious coolness of what it all entails, I'd love to do something similar and am starting to learn some more about networking basics.

My question is, what kinds of similar setups do folks on here have and what hardware/software combos have you had good or bad experiences with?

I'm willing to build a dedicated machine but would be just as handy right now to convert the laptop I'm about to retire!

Any guidance or info from someone who has what I'm talking about would be very much appreciated :)

    Thanks!
