Which version as there were a few? 1.4 litre 100bhp, 1.4 turbo 120bhp or 160bhp?

My uncle had the 1.4 non turbo 100bhp and it wouldn't pull you out of bed.

    They're a heavy fecker of a yoke. 1500kg for a 1.4 (IIRC)

Very heavy car, so get the most powerful one you can get. It can be a false economy buying the smaller engines for efficiency.

They're fairly reliable, drive well and are comfortable. The 140bhp 1.4t is the sweet spot but hard to get outside of the GTC and even then most are the 120bhp one.

    Hi

I have a '12 Astra J GTC but is the 2.0l diesel version. I can confirm that it is indeed a heavy car as it is based on the Insignia chassis... I don't know how fast or how much power would the 1.4 l petrol version would have, but mine is the 165 BHP version and it is VERY fast and also quite powerful... I like it and I've done around 55000 km in the last two years since I have it. They look a lot nicer than the Scirocco and cheaper to run. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

Yep, Astra is on the same platform as the newer Zafira Tourer, Chevy Volt/Cruze and Opel Ampera

The GTC has the hyper strut set up the insignia OPC has but that's the end of the similarities.

I have a a 2012 GTC model with the 120bhp turbo... have it a year now, done nearly 20k km's and so far so good, no issues at all.

as above, it does feel like is a very heavy car, but it still feels good and torquey, most of the power is low down in the rev range, so it doesn't feel "slow". there's good pull from standstill but the show is over by around 3k revs and it's time to change up. the 6 speed box keeps it on the move though and at 120kmh it's only doing 2100-2200 rpm.

it does probably 75% town driving and it's averaging 37mpg which is very reasonable considering it's mass.

it does feel very "german", a bit of a brick ****house, heavy doors, thick seats etc.

i'd aim for a higher spec car if possible, mine is SRi and it's a good step up from the "Sport" model. you get a much nicer brushed aluminium and imitation carbon dashboard inserts, half pleather seats, electronic handbrake, nicer wheels and various other goodies. but the difference that the aluminium and pleather make to the interior is really night and day over the basic car.
