Motor Tax HELP...pleeeassee

Hi, my motor tax is out of date for 12 month. I was signed off the road for a medical condition for 6 months of this time.
Is there ANY way I can write off those 6 months (yes, I was stupid enough not to go and get it sorted when I had the hospital cert).

Most importantly, given its so far out of date, I can't tax it online. Is there a way to tax it without going to the ONE office there is in Dublin which is only open when I am in work?

Any help would be appreciated.... VERY minimal info on the motor tax website.

I not sure about this but if you changed the ownership of the car maybe into your parents/ partner's name.

Yes. Change ownership to somebody else, and change it back to you. Then you do not have the tax arrears to pay.

Is there a charge to do this, or how do I do it?

You sell the car for 1 euro to someone you know then they sell it back for 1 euro when they get the logbook. Nothing complicated.

It will cost you a postage stamp and an envelope. "Sell" the car to a family member, even if te address is the same, it is ok. This means completing the sale on he logbook and sending it off to shannon. Within a couple of days, the name will be transferred to a new name. Youncan check this on www.motortax.ie and select "vehicle transaction inquiry". Enter the car registration number and when you see there has been a change, you can then tax it online. You apply for a PIN number online, sent by email and use that to tax the car. Enter any insurance details into the online form. You will be paying tax for the entire month of when the sale was completed. Maybe date the sale March 1st and post the form at the end of this month, saving you a month.

AFAIK, all letters to Government bodies, including the Vehicle Registration office is Freepost.....

Great. That all seems straight forward enough, so I sign the logbook over to someone else and I can then tax it in their name? Now I just need to find the log book.

    No.

You sign the logbook to someone else, and then they sign it back to you.

Only when you are the owner again, should you tax it. As then you will have no arrears to pay.

Personally I'd chance your arm with the medical cert and a well crafted letter to the relevant body. You might be wasting your time so I'd weigh it up versus the 'cost' of an extra owner on the log book come resale etc.

I must have wasted at least €2 on postage stamps in recent times. Robbed i tell ya!

    They won't be interested.
As far as they're concerned, "they've heard it all before" and "rules are rules" etc. The system is simply not set up to make exceptions.
One more owner on the VLC means very little in this country....if we like it, we buy it.:)
