    Evening all,

A good friend is looking to sell his RS32 Golf, 2007.

He's nervous at being flooded with test pilots and tyre kickers and wouldn't be at all used to how to sell a car etc.

Anyone advise any specialist sites that may be worth listing it on or is it just the donedeal / carzone places that are the only real options? Am I right in thinking he will get a lot of hassle from 18 year olds etc ?

    Thanks in advance !

Get "test pilots" to prove that they have insurance before they get behind the wheel. Tell them on the phone that they will have to do this before your friend will meet them.

@Bandara, I'm in the market at the moment for a motor. Send me a link if he puts it up.

Price it realistically and it will sell.

Most R32 Golf prices are insane and there is a market

What would you consider realistic ?

Can't imagine too many 18 year olds forking out €1809 for a years tax.

I'd put a well worded advert on autostadt with plenty of pics and history. You can check anyone who sends PMs and ascertain if they tend to have a bit of cop on.

The thought of dealing with a car like that on done deal puts shivers down my spine.

I'd recommend searching for legit Volkswagen enthusiast pages on Facebook and to post it there.
Im not sure how much there are but I know that there's a good few Ford one's that I often post in and you'd get genuine people who are interested replying.

They wont, but they sure as hell will ring looking for a 'go in it'

I'd echo MC's comment above - put a well detailed ad up on autostadt.ie. Lots of genuine VW enthusiasts on there. Just make sure he words it properly - it's an R32 not an RS32 ;)

That said, I'd say DoneDeal is still probably the best bet, if you can deal with the idiots and timewasters. Autostadt is good for showing it off with lots of nice pics but you'll get more "good luck with the sale..." type of comments than actual concrete interest.

I was considering R32 as I use car very rarely kind of for shopping only but tax is just ridiculous.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,108 ✭✭✭Roger Mellie Man on the Telly

I love R32's, but for top tax I'd want to be in Pork or luxobarge.

Btw R32 is the last Golf that had such a great sound V6 Power.

Ah now, we're told every day here that modern diesels are very refined, and possibly sound even better than petrol...

My regular in Starbucks is €4.75. If you had one less coffee per day, you could afford it. I did the tots after I finished college and it was actually scary what I drank through :o

Still though, €4.95 per day every single day of the year just to have the thing on the road. Before you fuel or insure it. Bonkers.

It's not exactly a budget car. Tax would still be much cheaper than the fuel bill.

Is there any car where the tax is dearer than the average fuel spend?

So many petrol cars sound like ****e tbh. The problem is that now most of cars are turbo charged and unfortunately that's why for me R32 was the last stand.

Also btw I think some diesels are very, very good :)

The point I'm making is, why are people getting so hung up on the tax of a car like an R32.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,982 ✭✭✭Caliden

    ...and you'll be lucky to get 25mpg. It's a 250hp n/a v6, what's your point?

On topic: You could try pistonheads. 2007 r32's selling for about 16k euro

What would the running costs of an R32 be compared to an M5? if they retailed at the same price.

You would be 1 or 2 k short on the purchase price of a secondhand R32 for what it costs to run an M5(E60) for a year on average mileage, when you take into account the Tax,insurance, petrol, servicing etc on an M5

16k ? That's insane, he was planning on looking for 10!

They range in price. 16k would be for a clean one with low milage.

Cheapest on there is 7.5k gbp (10.1k euro).

I'm guessing they sell for more in the UK as the tax rate (485/yr) is much lower than here.

Because at the end of the day it's €1800 to tax a VW Golf. It's hard enough to justify spending that kind of money on tax for the likes of a BMW M3 or Porsche 911 never mind a Golf. There used to be a Mk4 R32 around my way and while I was talking to the owner one day I said that I'd never be able to stomach that kind of tax for a Golf - he said neither would he, that's why he had it down as a 1.8 on the log book (he was a guard, ironically).

To the OP - do not advertise the car on DoneDeal. Put it on Carzone - if someone is in the market for one they will be looking there. Consider putting it up on Pistonheads.com classifieds as well as specialist forums like Backroads.ie (although I did see one guy was attacked and ridiculed over there for joining to advertise his car so maybe not..).

If you do end up putting it on DoneDeal it will likely get a lot of views so just include the following to put off any muppets:

Genuine callers only, no test pilots, no timewasters, no texts, no swaps/trades - don't offer any, no test drive until I am satisfied, proof of insurance required, etc.

I did the sums on an M3 before, so I said I'd do it here as well.

Tax at €1800. MPG is stated at roughly 25mpg (11.3 litres per 100 km). I do about 70km per day just on the work commute. So average up to 500km per week or 57L of fuel. At the average of 131.9 that Pumps.ie is showing, that's €75 per week or €3900 per year.

So €5700 before you insure or maintain it. Staggering really.

Or to look at it another way, its 2 hours basic wage, every single day of the year.

But again, if you are in the market for this type of car, you accept this. Which is fine by my standards. Its just curious to see how it all adds up.

The father had one for about 6 months back in the day. Nice sound off it and it looked well, but at the end of the day, it's still a €55k Golf with an old school V6 under the bonnet. It wasn't particularly fast, drank fuel and generally was a bit underwhelming. I drove one last year too, felt more or less the same. Dealer was asking ludicrous money.

Not at all trying to have a go OP, just giving my 2c on the car. They do have a following so the likes of VAG forums and Carzone, a well worded ad etc should see it sell.

    Best of luck.

I've had both the 1.8T and Vr bought putting out similar power,if i had to choose between the two i'd choose Vr every time. The 1.8T is a fantastic engine but the VR is something special, the sound, the power delivery,it just wants to keep going.

It's probably the best engine VW ever made (in my opinion)

    Fair enough

Can't say I'd agree with it not being fast, I've driven it. It's a rocket imo

They're not a rocket at all, roughly as quick as a gti.
I had a 3.2 TT dsg, same basic car, lovely smooth engine but it was underpowered for what it was.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,235 ✭✭✭✭Cee-Jay-Cee

    If advertising it on DoneDeak:

Make sure you state Driving licence required before allowing anyone to test drive it and take a photo of it.

Proof of insurance before test drive.

Bring a friend with you and only allow the person looking to buy it in the car during test drive, their friends can stay behind.

Don't accept personal cheque snd Make sure you send the tax book/VLC off to Shamnon yourself.

Because of the tax I'd buy a nice GTi and remap it.
If I'm paying top rate of tax I want an M3/M5 or RS or similar.

Just not enough ooomph in the R32 to justify it imho.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,407 ✭✭✭Homer

^^^^^^ this!! I have had a few gtis and remapped the last one to 240 with the dsg gearbox was damn near as quick as an R32 for less money to buy, insure and tax!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,302 ✭✭✭Supergurrier

For same price you would buy an Edition 30 mk5 which just needs a remap for 300bhp.

    K04 Powah

like most Volkswagens it will be overpriced and overrated based on a non-factual reliability.

    Depends on the remap.

Alot of specialists like REVO in the uk make amazing remaps and have bought multiple ecu's to perfect fuelling etc to a tee

There are some decent one shot mappers about but alot of cowboys too.

    +1

Over ever used Martin in Autoremap myself. Although Joe Power comes highly recommended too.

I've used bespoke guys for mapping my Evo etc but that's a different ball game.
