Dropping/Dispatching Crows and similar

I'm doing a bit of corvid control for a farmer and I'm having a bit of trouble getting clean kills.

I started off using 30g no. 6 but I found they didn't have enough bang to drop them clean out of the sky. I went to the shop to get 32g loads but they only had them in no. 7. I found them to have better dropping power but obviously they don't have the same range. So I've managed to procure 32g no. 6s and will give them a bash tomorrow. But I have one or two questions

    1. What cartridge would you recommend for crows at 30 - 35 yards?

    2. How do you deal with crows that you've winged? I usually hit them a dig of the stock but don't really like doing this to my gun.

My gun is a 12g side by side with 2 3/4 inch chambers and I haven't a clue what the choke (fixed) is so

    3. How do I measure the choke on my gun?

    Thanks

at that range 7 32g should be enough, the 6 32g same thing, bring a stick (priest) with you for dispathing, your gun I would say is choked 1/4 and 1/2

    1. Personally I find 32g 6 RC Sipe good to 50 yards , Im using full choke in a semi automatic.

    2. Doesnt happen to me too often using the full choke but Id usually put a second shot into them once they hit the ground, a priest would do the job as said already, definitely keep your hands clear of the beak and feet..

    3. If you remove the barrels it should say around the proof marks , indicated by either little stars or by two letters.. The most common for a game gun is usually Full choke and Half choke... That would be * and *** or f/c and m/c

A fishing priest, length of gun barrel pipe or rebar will do. Sharp blow to the back of skull will be quick and painless. Pick them up across the back on either side of the wings. If thier walking wounded then put another barrel into them.

You can just cut a stick when out to finish em

RC Sipe in a 6 are great for the crows, great knocking power, have up on 1000 shot in the last two seasons with them and a home made priest if need to dispatch, bit of bamboo with lead poured into the top of it. put a pin through it to stop the lead flying out, great job.

agree with all stated by Deerhunter.......just to add that usually the left barrel is the tighter choke (1/2) for the second, further shot.

If a crow is a good distance out then you could just fire the left barrel at it.

Quick update lads. The no. 6s in 32g made a good job of the crows, only two winged, both of whom fell into a slurry pit. Put another shot into them from the gate to finish them. Cartridges were Eleys I think

My daughter(5 next week) just stands on crows head and does the job.
I don't like Eley cartridges at all. Used them for a while and found very little success with them. Changed to remingtons and was a lot better. 6 or 5 32# will do the job all the time and great for pigeons too.

i used to use eley for everything but now i find that remingtons are far better for me anyway.

tried a box of clever grand italia t3s on crows, expensive but were deadly! 28g 7.5s, gonna get a slab I think.

Was using eley supergame 32g 6s, not half as good.
