    Hi there,

My dad has recently got into making his own tables and chairs etc. It's his birthday soon and he says his chainsaw is not suitable to make more detailed tables etc. He says he may need a smaller one. I was wondering if anyone had any idea on a make or size that would suit his needs as I plan to get him one if I can.

    Thanks in advance.

A stihl xp one handed carpenters chainsaw. super to use but pricey. the small efco saws are a lot cheaper and go forever too, not just as balanced but.

Try an look for an arbourist's saw

Much pointier nose. Will probably kick back for fun

but dainty enough for wood work.

    what's your budget?

This is one of the cheapest small quality saws available in ireland : http://www.lawnmowerpartsonline.ie/shop/product/cs-310es-chainsaw

the wes echo models are even smaller/lighter, but more expensive

    http://www.lawnmowerpartsonline.ie/shop/product/cs-280wes-chainsaw

this to me is the best specced small saw on the market for reasonable money

The main alternative would be a stihl 201 and that's more than twice the price

I was looking into a small light saw recently but couldnt justify that kind of spend for the use it'd get so I picked up a stihl MS180 second hand. bulkier than those saws above but small enough for me.

I dont think a top handled saw would be suited to this type of work, and they're frickin dangerous yokes too

Stihl do a range of saws specifically for carving:

And you can get carving bars and chains for lots of popular saw brands:

Don't buy a top handle for carving, you don't have the leverage and control that you do with a rear handle saw.
Top Handles are designed for arboreal use not work on the ground like carving.

A stihl 200t converted to a back hande saw would be a nice unit for carving, occasionally pop up on ebay.

    Are lawnmowerpartsonline recommended?
I've not used them before, they seem to have a nice range at good prices.
