UPC Speed Issue

Just had UPC installed and he done the checks connected to the laptop and got around the 200 mark

We have home plugs set up and are getting 40 odd, when we had Eircom we were told around 12 and we got that with the same set up

Checking various posts and I have the right speed home plugs and connections on the pc, not sure on the cat of the cable (I’d say it’s not as its old).

    Anyone got any ideas?

Thats them, I checked on here as had the lesser model(and returned them) and from what I seen they should easily give 100

Homeplug performance varies based on a LOT of factors. It would not be abnormal for them to run at those kind of levels.

You can google for ways to improve their link, but it may just be the in situe wiring which is not something easy to change.

The ones you linked to only have a 100Mb connection. You would only really get the 100Mb if they were in the same room, on the same ring with no interference. 40 isn't actually that bad...

Home plugs are finicky as feck sometimes...

If I was going to get home plugs I would get these lads

So basically I need a 1000 Mbps Powerline?

I got these in Argos in October, I wonder if i act dumb and say it says 500 on box but im only getting 40 with my 250 UPC

    This is where its misleading.

AV500 or 500Mbps is the half duplex *theoretical* link speed. Its like where your wifi says 300Mbps but really it wont ever get near that.

100Mbps refers to the ports on the bottom, they're fast ethernet vs gigabit ethernet. This limits the throughput to 85-90Mbps. Not the problem for you.

Whats most likely up is the REAL speed between the homeplugs is about 50Mbps, and you're getting 45ish including overhead. The HPs you have are decent units, there are newer ones but if the loop quality is the limiting factor you wont see a major improvement even if you spend massive money on new ones.

Check the usual things, direct to sockets, no surge protectors, no gang leads etc etc. Google will give you a list. Thats were you might see improvement. If no, go WirelessAC or run Cat5E cable.

The fella installing them did and got 190 wired direct from router to his laptop

The router is a Technicolor TC7200.U. According to the installer he said they are the best ones and he only installs them

Would be worth testing yourself but id reckon the modem is grand and would be the plugs causing the slowdown
