Friend has been signed off sick and has a mortgage. He is single so FIS wouldnt apply. If he was renting he would get some help with the rent but the Mortgage Interest payment is no longer given. Any advice on any help or any allowance available from Social Protection would be appreciated as I haven't seen anything on the Welfare.ie site. If no help is available he will be another homeless statistic as he has no savings and will go into arrears on his mortgage. Any advice for him? He is totally stressed out with worry so I thought I would ask here.

    This is totally alarmist!!

There are many stages and a long period of time between going into arrears and becoming homeless!!

How long does he expect to be sick for?

He's getting sickness payment about e180 a week and hopes not to be out for long. I already told him not to be stressing out. He has always paid his mortgage on time and he is very worried that he can't pay it this month. That's why I was trawling the welfare.ie site to see if any other help was available. Found none. I know it is a long drawn out process before a home is repossessed and there are avenues to go down but it doesn't stop him worrying about it.

Can he not talk to the bank? Request a moratorium? Use savings to pay it?

The bank probably wont even bother to engage until its well into arrears.

I really dont understand what he is worrying about, if he misses a mortgage repayment the world wont end.

Its good practice to keep money set aside for this type of contingency however I appreciate that many people are barely making ends meet as it is so this may be a good idea but not practical.

The welfare system isnt there to cover people for the odd mortgage payment.

The first thing he should do is contact his bank and tell them. Given that it a short term thing they will most likely be willing to help. However he should call them and speak to them.

If he has no luck with the bank maybe he could consider St Vincent de Paul and then pay the money back to them in small amounts when he is back to work.

As above contact the bank straight away in writing.
