All New Heating System Required - What to go for?

    Hi All,

We are looking at renovating a 1970s era bungalow that has been vacant for a few years.

The plumbing and heating system is extremely old and in need of a complete overhaul. I'm used to gas central heating but wont have that in the new location.

What are your views on oil fired, wood pellets, geo thermal?

I'm debating the usual radiator option versus underfloor, or a mixture of the two.

This is really a blank canvas so nothing is ruled out at the moment.

    Thanks!

    Insulate, insulate, insulate....

1970's properties were notorious for lack of insulation and for heat loss. If, as you say, you have a blank canvass you can start from the suspended timber floor beneath you to the attic above and insulate accordingly. Draught proofing around doors/windows is also recommended.

As for heating, the jury is always out on oil v wood v sustainable technologies.

You get what you pay for but - if gas is not an option - I'd go for oil as it's more controllable for zoning, changeable weather etc.

    Thanks Filbert,

I think I will be getting in touch with a few companies for the insulation as well as seeing if we can get a grant for the work.

The building is covered in shocking pebbledash which I'm thinking of getting removed and re rendered so would look to try and do external insulation as well. Might as well since the place needs gutting!

Is there any views on which boiler brands are best?

    Cheers

Thanks Augsta, I have had a quick look at the Grant boilers look great.

    Hi Ronn,
No mains gas in Menlo unfortunately, although I am thinking a bottle of LPG for a hob.
