Car Insurance Claim

Hi here is my story.. looking back i did everything wrong but i panicied. last week 1 day i was driving into a shopping centre when another driver was driving out and we hit each other. i got out of the car and accepted resposability and apolagised. The driver and her boyfriend got out very annoyed and started asking for my insurance details which i give to them. Then the guy said maybe we should settle ourselves and not go through the insurance. i asked how much they would think fair and he said € 90. I paid him this and we went our seperate ways.. I got no details off him which was foolish.. They have now made a claim against me; my insurance company wrote to me today looking for my side of the story. Im worried because i am a learner driver and was on my own and also my NCT certificate is also expiried a good few months.
I could deny having a accident or should i just try be honest and tell the truth. the insurance company might say im not covered because of the licence and nct...
    anyone any similiar experiances ?
the guy is clearly being dishonest because he seemed ok and was prepared to settle there and then. now wants to claim( for what i dont know, maybe developed a sore neck at home).
    any advice mostly appreciated

Honesty is the best course. The 90 is gone. Forget about that. Talk with your insurance company and disclose all the details to them.

Last bit of advice, dont come to after hours seeking help!

just a note : it was a 00 honda civic i hit. just door needed fixed. we were both going slow so no major damage and no injuries to driver or passenger

Your insurance will pay out to whoever you hit and if you have fully comp they will not cover your damage.

Ring your insurance and tell them what happened.

    Who was to blame ?

you are a learner and you were on your own, I wasn't even there and I know it was your fault.
don't admit you gave them 90 euro are apoligised. say that they admitted it was there fault and see if one of your friends might have just happened to be walking past when they hit your car and admitted liability.

If you drive with no license you deserve all that you get. You are not qualified to drive, you should not be driving. One thing that has always perplexed me about Ireland is people driving with no license. Your insurance is invalid if you have not passed the test and are driving alone. You are a menace to other road users.

In an accident it only matters that you have insurance. Motor Tax and NCT are irrelevent.

I was to blame.. they were coming out too fast also. i went to jump on the brake and missed the pedal(silly me) . im just pissed.. i thought we had settled but they obviously had a think about it and decided to try get more from insurance. if they wanted another hundred or 2 id pay. ill be paying through the nose now for insurance.... and their car not worth 300

My father is a panel beater. Reminds me of a time a lad came to get his car fixed. Hit by a lorry driver and nearly a grand of damage (was a nice car). Lorry driver admitted it was his fault. Damage was priced, both partys happy, car got fixed, the father got paid, and the young laid was told to go to Roscommon to get the money.
Rang the man when he was in Roscommon town and was told to Fcuk off and get a soliciter. Felt very bad for him as he was an honest nice chap.
To this day, i believe its good to get a report, weather your fault or not. At least you're covered then. Regardless if its a 15 yr old civic or not, a few days later who's to say 'you' didnt damage the back door and quater panel too?

Be honest with your insurance company.

I rear ended a car while I was joining traffic once. I was starting from a parked position and was joining traffic that was stopped at lights. I was watching the guy behind me and not the guy in front of me who hadn't moved. I was wrong. anyway, we did exchange details and I did say if the cost wasn't much I'd pay. I can't remember how much it was for a finish but I paid it.

That very day I did ring my insurance company to report the accident and told them I'd probably settle it without them. They were only too delighted and it didn't go on my record.

Long story short,Ask them how much the claim is for, tell them your side. It's up to them how they will proceed.

You'll struugle for quotes & you'd be well advised to start checking out something like this (which is kinda cool tbf).

Tell the truth OP & sit your test sharpish.

Actually I'm wrong on this.It happened a long time ago and thinking back I didn't ring my insurance company, they rang me a few weeks later asking what the story was with a claim they had received. I told them I was willing to settle it myself and had told the other party like wise. They gave me the contact details of the solicitor acting on behalf of the other party and we settled it. It didn't go onto my "official" record as in, my no claim bonus or premiums weren't affected.

this BS your third party insurance is still valid.

phone your insurance company and tell them exactly what happened

    Almost a classic.

Sounds fishy to me you hit a woman's car and her boyfriend wanted to settle it for cash there. Could well be a scam. Do you or your folks know any guards do you have the reg?

What's done is done 90% of drivers drove on their own while on a provisional license and its only this year that they started cracking down on the nct. Insurance companies knew both of these right well and were happy to take ouur money

Best be honest with them and tell them it was your fault or at least mostly your fault.
Make sure you book a test bad enough having a claim you don't want to add points to the mix

Apologies. I assumed it was like the UK where unlicensed drivers were not covered at all. Makes me shake my head even more!

According to the Insurance Federation of Ireland.. an insurer may reserve the right not to pay, but it depends on the conditions outlined in the policy.

Insurer must cover third party claim and cannot "reserve right not to pay". However after they settle they can reserve the right to seek a refund from you.
