The gearbox on my Nissan Almera is grinding when I try to put it in to reverse and it's a struggle to get it into fifth gear at times. I assume the gearbox needs to be reconditioned. can anyone tell if I definitely need to do this and I'd so is there any good resource for instructions on doing this.

I know it's going to be an extremely long process but at the moment it's the only route I can afford.

    thanks in advance :)

You'd be better off getting one from a breakers. If it has been grinding a long time chances are it will be beyond saving.

I think they're made by Cadbury. Chance one at the breakers, it's a fairly simple swap out.

It's only just started grinding tonight.

Would a second hand gearbox not be as likely to go. Looking on Google it seems to be a fairly common fault. How much would a second hand one be roughly.

perhaps changing the gear oil might help, did for me, although I had do it twice before it came good.

Was that on the Almera chocolate box?

Ok so the gearbox was working fine over the weekend no grinding our stickiness of gears but this morning it's back to the same thing. I can get it most of the way into reverse but it grinds in the last little bit. Does this sound like more of a clutch issue?

Wishful thinking eh, either way it's a gearbox out job. I think it's usually the diff breaking up. There's a huge amount of them on the road and in the breakers, so parts are cheap and plentiful.
Wheels off, battery out, starter off, drive shafts off, then the box, then either replace the box or the clutch or both.
    Have fun.

Have done a few of these and good almera gearboxes are like hens teeth, get one for under 250 and you will be very lucky, all the breakers seem to know their value sadly.

Just to update on this if anyone ever has similar issues. Mine ended up being dirty clutch oil. Changed it and it's been grand ever since.

Sorry meant to say fluid rather than oil for the hydraulic clutch.
