Fireplace renovation

We have an old fireplace that looks to be tiled concrete. Is there a way to revamp the fireplace without having to drill out the concrete? I'm hoping we could do something like remove the tiles and then clad with limestone slab or something similar, using the original concrete as the base. Is this even possible?

Don't see why not. You can pick up a cheap rotary hammer drill with chisel bits in the likes of B&Q which will make short work of removing the tiles. You switch the machine to hammer action, insert a bit and away you go.
