Where to buy Olympic bar + weights

Making my own home gym, have a squat rack, bench etc but need to buy a bar and weights. I'm not an avid lifter, only started about a year ago, so don't need anything fancy but obviously don't want to buy something that'll break!

    Any suggestions, shops or online?

D8 fitness or strengthshop are the only two id have experience with. If you email strengthshop theyll advise on a bar to suit your requirements theyre sound enough as is the guy in D8.

This looks like good value... Too good to be true? Probably a bit too light for my deadlifts, but I could probably pick up a cheap 20kg pair somewhere?

Elverys have 100kg Olympic Set for 200 euro. In work so can't get the link!

    Probably poor enough quality?

Would definitely go with anything from d8 fitness over that.

I've got this bar which is very good for the money (€170)

You are better off spending a bit extra on a bar as a good bar will last a lot longer. Cheap bars will bend very quickly and have crappy knurling.

That could be a good shout, not sure what the bar is like but it's likely much better than the bar from Elvery's. It would be wise to pick up a few extra plates as you would probably exceed 80kg fairly quickly. It would also be beneficial to pick up a pair of 2.5kg plates and a pair of 1.25kg plates so you can make weight increases smaller than 10kg.

As a first time weights purchase outside of the gym I don't mind! Once it works I'll be happy!

Yeah, the other option was I was thinking of going for that €170 bar, I am currently out injured with a broken collar bone so I imagine I'll be rehabing once it's all healed up, which probably means starting again at 20kg for most compounds. So, maybe buy the bar, then pick up a set of weights from adverts.ie later down the road.

Yeah I have a few fractional plates laying around and could buy some cheaply anyway.

The point is that it the bar would probably end up knackered very quickly. There's no point being cost effective on a first time set if it needs replacing in 6 months. Spending a bit more now could see you sorted for a few years.

A entry level bar from D8 Fitness plus 20/10/5kg plates would costs you $285. (or $305 for 20/15/5). Worth the extra cash imo.

Is the D8Fitness kit good? Considering getting it even though I dont have a garage gym or any dedicated area. With bumpers I was thinking I could do workouts outside on nice days and use the gym on bad days

There's a reason experienced lifters recommend it.

Just looking on the d8fitness site and I'm wondering whats the difference between this http://www.d8fitness.com/product/7ft-d8-olympic-lifting-bar/

    and the chrome bar http://www.d8fitness.com/product/7ft-olympic-bearing-harden-chromed-bar-28mm/

If you want a bar that you can smash and have for AT LEAST 3 years, go for the €170 one.

I say that because I have 6 and they got dogs abuse daily in the gym.

No cheap bar will be perfect for weightlifting/dropping from overhead, but with a little respect and not beign a complete idiot, the €170 bar will last for a long long time.

Left it too late to pick these up! And the €170 bar is gone. :(

Just an update, ended up getting the €150 elite Oly bar from D8, and then a starter pack of 100kg bumper plate weights from adverts.

The bar is different than the €150 one they have up currently, main difference being the one I got used brushing for rotation, and it has a nicer brushed metal finish with a black chrome bar.

The weights haven't arrived yet but I'm currently rehabing a broken collarbone so I've been doing some stuff with the empty bar as part of my rehab. Seems like a nice bar, knurling could be a bit more 'grippy' and it has no centre knurling (although I don't really know if that helps or not for squats... if it starts slipping I'll just buy one of those padded supports).

I've yet to actually weigh the bar but it seems like a really solid 20kg... It's defo feels heavier to the bars I used in Flyfit, so I'm wondering a) are the bars in flyfit less than 20kg (and all my lifts were actually lighter than I thought!), or b) is it just because I haven't lifted anything in 3 months that it seems heavier.

Rotation seems smooth enough, although it isn't important to me as I don't do much power lifting beyond C&J's, mostly the basic compounds for me.

Only thing I don't really like is maybe because the bar itself is black chrome but it seems 'thinner'? I think it's 1inch but it just feels a little thin or something, and the parts that don't have knurling are VERY slippy because of the finish.

But for €150 it seems like a great buy, really solid, can't imagine it'll ever get bent out of shape, I don't drop my weights so it shouldn't anyway.

Will let you know what the black bumper plates are like... I know at €2.85 per kg I could've gotten cheaper but they're new, boxed, and delivered to my door.. I'm far too lazy to go around scrounging 2nd hand plates from several different sources.

Lads the links for the D8 fitness bars that were recommended in the previous posts dont work.

Does anyone know if the bar below thats currently for sale on D8 is the bar that was previously sold for 170 or is it the lesser quality bar from D8

Elite Olympic lifting bar 28mm/20kg - D8 Fitness D8 Fitness

Looks a lesser quality one. I don't know for sure but I think the one that was 170 had a 600kg rating or higher. The one you linked is 300kg.
