New job - what to wear

So I've started working in a new company and I'm not sure what to wear....the contract said 'smart business casual'.

It's mainly a male dominated environment and they are all wearing jeans, shirt and jumper and smart runners or casual shoes. Well apart from the mangers who wear smart shoes, trousers and a shirt and jumper. There's only one female and she's wearing trouser suits with a plain tshirt, but she is also a manager.

I'm in my mid twenties, and tall enough. I don't want to be wearing heels, I'm happy in flats. So far I've worn plain dresses and cardigans with flats. Are jeans too casual? Trousers too smart? Help?!

I never know what business casual means and it might be good to check with the company but you could do worse than poping into Zara. They usually have loads of smart casual trousers in different colours and patterns.

Maybe not necessarily pattern but similar fit to this:http://m.zara.com/ie/en/woman/trousers/geometric-jacquard-cigarette-trousers-c358005p2497041.html

Is "smart business casual" not a complete contradiction in terms? They're not exactly being helpful there.

What you've been wearing so far sounds fine, could you maybe ask the other woman there if she thinks what you're wearing is appropriate? If the lads are wearing jeans, then I see no reason why you couldn't, but I would keep them in a dark wash, boot-cut, and wear them with a smart shoe and a blazer.

I think jeans are fine, but get them in a dark wash. I wear them with knitted jumpers, shirts or a nice top, or during the summer it's mainly t-shirts and short sleeve tops. I don't wear heels to the office either, mainly brogues or other flat shoes and during the winter I wear chelsea style boots.

Yeah I plan to wear cropped trousers like that, only thing is it's a bit cold at the minute so my feet get too cold :(. Yeah I think I will pick up a nice blazer once I get paid (eeek :D can't wait to go shopping!). Might wait til I get a blazer until I wear jeans, so I can be a bit more dressy :) thanks girls!
