    Hi all,

I recently purchased a new laptop and installed Adblock to...well, block ads :) It didn't seem to be working despite being correctly downloaded, so Google tells me that Adblock apparently does not work with Windows 8 :( Can someone recommend me a good alternative to Adblock? The laptop is a new HP, using Windows 8. My browser is IE.

Did you install from official site?

    https://adblockplus.org

It's a browser plugin not a program IIRC.

Not sure if it was the official site, but it was McAfee verified as safe...I went to the official site using the link you gave and tried again. It's still not working...

    Adverts. Adverts everywhere!!!

And yes, I'm a bit of a Luddite when it comes to these things....so all advice is welcome.

Adblock is available for Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera

    There's your problem.

Is that a recent thing? My last laptop, which I had for about 4 years, was also a HP using Windows 7, and Adblock worked fine on that (using IE) once I installed it...

Should I switch to Chrome or something then?

Which version of Internet Explorer do you have?

According to this, it works on 11 on Windows 8.

Thanks everyone, but the problem seems to have resolved itself. I restarted the computer after I downloaded/installed Adblock yesterday, but perhaps I should have turned the computer off completely and turned it on again. When I turned the laptop on this morning, there were no ads to be seen, so maybe that was the problem...

    Thanks again!

The best Adblocker I've used recently is UBlock, but its not available for IE, as far as I know. Works in both Chrome and Firefox (beta version for Firefox).
