Motor tax import question

I wonder can anyone answer a quick query for me -

I'm thinking of importing a car, but I'm wondering what motor taxation system it would fall under. If I import a car that was first sold/registered in the UK before July 2008, but subsequently first registered in Ireland this year, does it fall under the old engine size system, or the new CO2 system?

If it was registered in 2008 or later, it would fall under the CO2 emissions for Road Tax. Doesn't matter when in 2008 it was registered - my car was originally registered in the UK in March 08, and is on emissions based road tax.

It goes by original date of registration, not when it was re-registered here. So if the car was originally registered in another country in 2006 for example, it will automatically go on the old engine size tax system.

    That's great, thanks.

So if I buy a UK car that was registered in the UK before 2008, then import it and register it here, it will be taxed based on engine size?

    Yes.

Yes, only 2008 upwards cars are effected by co2 based taxation. If it's a pre July 08 car it goes on whichever system is cheaper.

Not certain that you're right there. I think a uk import 08 will be emissions either way?
