Have 15 acres taken off a lad and no power on site or within 500 meters.
I have used battery fencer in it for the last 2 years and works fine until battery goes and cattle have went for a walkies. batteries are €19 and using 4 or 5 over the year.

So thinking of getting a solar powered electric fencer. I have been told you need to recharge them with a mains recharged once ever 4/6 weeks. Ill only be using from March to Sept/Oct. Security wise, I can put the unit it a shed and panel on the roof. This place is the back arse of nowhere and then another 3 mile away.

So what model have you and how do you find it?

great job, well worth it, have 1 for last 3 years, charge it once over winter, stick in field in april and leave it there until november, get long earth rods and bury them in a stream or ditch and it will lift man and beast, i bough mine in connaught agri in claremorris and think its secur model by lacme, its running approx 40 acres of 2-4 acre paddocks

Maybe you would prefer a purpose built unit but there was a thread here recently about using a car battery and solar panel to run an ordinary battery fencer. Going to try that this year with one. Have 4 battery fenecers and they could all be on the go at times.

I use a Pel 401, bought it for strip grazing sheep through the winter, even in short days the battery never needed to be charged, mine has a mains adaptor as well, bought it about ten years ago, I know it was dear then, but it was only dear the first day....gave great service since.
Here's a link, mine's the same as the 401 at the bottom

no as far as I remember it was a complete package, fencer, panel, battery, earth rods, etc, I did upgrade to longer rods

I've a lacme also. They are a serious solar fencer. It comes with a deep cycle dry cell battery and a solar panel big enough to trickle feed it. You need to get a model to suit the length of fence you want to drive.

As Charlie bull said they only need a light charge before you stick it out in the spring. This will do you until you are bringing it back in for the winter.

They are every bit as strong reliable as a mains unit. You are buying peace of mind. They light all lights on fence tester. A good earthing is the key and have it secured well against theft and you're laughing.

I must get one of these also. my battery fencer goes through batteries for fun, at 25euro a pop you wouldn't be long buying a solar one.
What sort of battery do they generally use? car/tractor bat?

Always thought the lacme fencers were dear for what you were getting. I got a wolseley solar fencer from a crowd in Galway irishsales.ie.

went for the higher range model sx300 and never had a days trouble and was cheaper than lacme . Takes two mins to setup as comes with mounting earth bar and unit sits on this.

Would highly recommend wolseley stuff as made in UK and not cheap chinese stuff. I know the lacme one is french but speaking about other fencers there.

Or maybe just too dear in this rip off republic of a country http://myselleria.com/S229-fencer
Seems a lot cheaper than here

I saw that site before alright. It looks equivalent price as the wolselely fencer but if you look you pay extra for the solar panel. So working out around 450 for a lacme unit instead of around over 300 with irish sales.ie. and the Wolseley one has slightly more power.

When I was buying I did a lot of looking at solar fencers. And you are right that site is selling lacme fencers cheaper than here but the Wolseley still works out good bit cheaper.

Each to their own at the end of the day, whatever suits people best, but for me only one runner.

I was thinking of the secur 200 for 329 plus a 10w solar panel from eBay around 20 euro
The lacme secur 500 looks a serious bit of kit my only worries is it might be lifted by someone
Has anyone ideas to hide battery fencers on remote sites

Yeah but are you talking about a poor solar panel then and back to my cheap import thinking. Even by going your route you are spending probably 350 including shipping g for the fencer and probably 30 - 40 Euro for the panel. So u are coming up on 400. But yet u get the Wolseley for just over 300 and that comes with everything including the earth bar.

What u reckon or is my thinking way off. I am coming from spot where I have a system that does what I want. I thought of your way but was worried about getting g crappie panel etc and things not matching up

Don't know l am just thinking of getting second solar charger and saw a few lads on boards recommended lacme having had them trouble free
I had a small pel fencer with panel built in but had some issues with wires corrosion and battery then it dissapered .
I am now thinking of buying the best I can and the secur 500 with 5 joules of power that l can attach a deep cycle marine battery and solar panel to after is appealing to me
As it would be on an out farm with no power around 70 acres.
I know it will cost a bit more but I'm hoping it will last longer in my setup and I can add on to it as time goes on.
Halfords sell a deep cycle battery 70ah for 75 euro.
I'm thinking if I could fit in a big blue drum and stick a panel outside might have a trouble free setup that could be left out all year.
Horses for coarses I suppose I'm fencing hill mountain type land.

If you want to cover that distance then you would need stronger that what I have. Mine covers about 20 -25km which I think works out to be about 50 acres (Double check this).

Works out dear your way though as you would be up on over 600 when u include the secur 500, battery, earth bar and solar panel. I don't have it covering every field at once as I have switches to disconnect when fields not stocked, so if you could do that way you might save a few pound.

The worst and good thing is that there are a few options lol. I wanted something reliable as had bought a cheaper one previously and lasted about a month with no kick. So whatever you are buying buy something decent.

The putting in a barrel might be the job alright. For the battery you could probably get an 80ah+ in micks garage for about 20 quid extra. I think that's what I paid for one few months back.

Bought a lacme 300 with 25 w panel, for 450 euro. Works a charm. Solid unit and very easy set up. Only thing I'd say is that is probably overkill if u are still on about the 15 areas, as have it running on just short of 50 acres without probs.

    Hi
Bought a Lance 500 with panel.
    Serious shot from it.

Hi do u mind me asking how much u paid for it. When I was looking they were up on 900euro so was not for me as didn't need the range so went for the secur 300

I brought a lacme 500 as well from this site. http://myselleria.com/P7424-lacme-secur-500 for 380 no panel or battery though
irishsales.ie are selling them at good enough value as well now.
I plan on getting a solar panel off eBay or amazon for it over the next few months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10 manpaq

I actually bought mine from irishsales.ie as we're cheapest around by a good bit. Plus they include 25w solar panel with is brilliant. Let of places I looked at only supplied 10w.
What acreage are u covering with the secur 500?

    ye still only 15 acres.

Looking at Irishsales.ie on donedeal and they do one that's €300 that covers 30 acres. think I might invest now

Couldnt tell you what that model is like, but would definitely recommend the Lacme if you go that route. Happy farming lol
