UPC TC7200 Router Wireless problems

    Hi There,

I am looking for some advise with resolving an issue with my wireless connection.
I have a 120MB fibre connection with UPC using a Technicolor TC7200 router.

The wireless connection is very erratic and tends to drop constantly. I have connected directly to the router via the ethernet cable and did a speed check and the result is in the range of 100-120mb so speed is solid to the point of the router.

Standing next to the router and testing the wireless speed it is in the range of 30-40mb, but this is best case. When I move to the other rooms of the house it is typically in the range of 5-10mb. The kids cannot stream any content from their devices as it always buffering. They cannot use xbox live as the connection is always dropping. The same with the AppleTVs in the house.

I have reset the router on several occasions. I am constantly changing the wireless channels between 1,6 & 11 but normally will only give marginal improvement and this is temporary.

We are a tech laden house and last count there are approximately 16 devices that connect to the network (3 laptops,3 iPads,4 phones,2 AppleTVs,2 Sat receivers, 2 Game consoles). Not sure if this is causing the congestion to our wifi network.Obviously these are not all being used simultaneously.

I have read several threads regarding port forwarding, wifi extenders, IPv4 v IPv6
and I am a bit overwhelmed in what my best course of action is to resolve my home network wireless issues.

I would really appreciate if someone could give me advise to what the best course of action is to improve my current situation.

    Regards,
    TheCeltictiger

Hi @TheCeltictiger did you get the problem resolved? I'm having the exact same issue - the router is in the living room and is fine when connecting from there, but moving 5 or 6 meters away to a bedroom the signal goes from 'Excellent' to 'Weak'.

It would be great if you could let me know if you got it fixed and how.

    Hi Some_Randomer,

Unfortunately, I still have not resolved the problem and I still have to resort to logging into the router and changing the wireless channels about.

I did pick up a set of Homeplugs which fixed the issue I was having with my Satellite box continually dropping its wireless connection.

It looks like I will have to eventually invest in a dual band router as all my reading and investigations have led me to conclude that the TC7200 is a piece of crap.

Hi thanks for your fast reply.

I was about to go messing with my router and change the frequency and channels but it seems like this might not do much good.

I've already tried a Netlink router but the signal is even worse off this. It's several years old though so could be an age thing.

Seems like the only thing to do is get a high end router as described in the previous link.
