Is De-Icer spray potentially damaging to paintwork? And therefore best avoided?

    Yes.

Use water that is above freezing point.

    ?????
    Really?
I used various deicers over last 20 years and they never affected my paint.

Using water to clear your frozen windows is just stupid. Use deicer or scraper.

Not sure if de-icer will damage paint but about the water - it depends.
Using water in subzero climate is not a good idea, it'll freeze again.

For most of Ireland it's grand with warm water though, we don't get subzero during the day. For me scraping is the best option, that's how I always have done it.

I have used deicer a lot this winter just with regular enough early starts at 5am it's the simplest, quickest and easiest way of clearing the windscreen. I can see no damage to the paint or wipers at all really.

I only use my De-Icer if I have no access to mild water, faster and smells less with that :pac:

Have used deicers on many cars, not a single issue. Most of them are based on Ethylene Glycol; The same principle is used in aircraft deicer - and each plane gets thoroughly sprayed all over, high pressure gaskets et al, multiple times a day, for the entire duration of winter, for years to end. If you really are so worried, just make sure you carefully spray the glasses and nothing else.

Mostly I use a scraper...quickest and most effective solution by far. Water isn't the almighty idea most people parade; Sometimes it refreezes and, if it's warm, it might actually crack the glass due to thermal shock (managed to do it on an very old Renault I drove when I first got my license!).
